Hi Oscar , thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My mission was inspired by the people, culture and community I was exposed to growing up. I was very fortunate to have been a part of a number of different communities as it helped me gain perspective and understanding of people and their backgrounds. I discovered that there was a lot of talent and a lot of amazing people- yet their stories were untold, their struggles weren’t acknowledged, and they experienced lack of awareness and resources that inevitably positioned them at a disadvantage. My mission in effortless words is to showcase you for who you are and what you’re destined to be. #shineyourlight
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Before Nova Star Media I was working in the corporate field as an account executive. Aside from that, I aspired to be and was actively working towards being a professional dancer. During my time in corporate, I used my finances to buy the proper equipment and tools I needed to get the ball rolling for this aspired prospect. The notion of starting a media company came to me during the pandemic as I explored different art forms outside of dance. I eventually came to the point where I could no longer stay in the corporate world and wanted to explore my mentation. Once I decided to take this initiative, I quit my secure 9-5 job to follow my dream as an artist and as an entrepreneur. I took the leap of faith but it wasn’t picture-perfect. It started off with shooting pictures on my iPhone 13 in my mother’s garage with close friends. The wages made during these beginning stages were used to help save on dance expenses. During the duration of the beginning months, I worked as a part-time Uber Driver to help pay remaining bills and continuously invest into the business. Similar to anything in life, I struggled for the first couple of months learning the ins and outs of running a business but I grew through trial and error. My hard work eventually paid off as my labor started to be recognized locally and in the southeast region. Finally, after some time, I eventually was put in a position where I was able to stop working as a part-time Uber driver due to the business flourishing. This occurred in December of 2021. In March of 2022, I was then joined by my sister (Sharai Heredia), as she is now co-owner/photographer of Nova Star Media. Her onboarding permitted the making of a family business. Since then, we have been blessed to birth a legacy in our family, create history and have granted the expansion of our company to two locations and actively work towards expanding more.
Our company specializes in storytelling through photography and videography. Using this form of perspective creates a connection between the content created and the audience. The process of storytelling ensures the forefront of value and purpose instilled in the production. Nova Star has a wide range of clientele and issues vary depending on the client; considering the contrasting desires in markets. A common problem our company comes across that we’re able to solve efficiently is lack of conceptualization and planning. Often, our clients come with visions either incomplete and/or unsure of the direction they want to go with their content. The biggest differentiation our company has against others would have to be the advantage of working in both the corporate and entertainment industry. Possessing these experiences allows me to properly approach client’s content with awareness and grants execution to creativity appropriately. Our biggest accomplishment as a company is to be able to use our expertise to produce what started as a concept and utilize the capacity of our specialities to formulate a storyline for a finished product.
Why did I start Nova Star Media?
I’ve always had a passion for helping people. I find helping people reach their dreams or goals to be rewarding. One of my greatest inspirations comes from God, my mother, my family, the culture and all the untold stories and visions people obtain. Living in a new generation, it has granted us the opportunity and power to take control of our own narratives, rewrite and leverage ourselves as well as the community to inspire positive change. Due to our goal at Nova Star Media being to help people shine their light, #shineyourlight; we provide services to exclusively capture your light. Your light can be defined as an idea, vision, goal, story, etc. This saying is a generalized quote that grants clients free reign to their “light.” It allows them to be whoever or whatever they want to be. Nova Star prioritizes providing a platform to help leverage you and encourage your shining light. We comprise a very diverse clientele and portfolio ranging from weddings, corporate events, commercials, small business owners, entrepreneurs, personal brands, influencers, content creation, artists, interviews, documentaries and many more.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Our mission is to help individuals shine their light through self-expression by doing what they love the most. This includes their passion(s), stories, ideas, accomplishments or aspirations! Our goal is accomplished by using media as a platform to help showcase “you” to the world. We live in a different era and it’s imperative that we utilize innovation. With the establishment technology has made over the years and the power of media, it’s helped control our lives, change the narrative along with inspire positive change within people and communities. As a company, we also strive to capture timeless memories that are pleasurably relived eternally through our storytelling.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Our most recent pivot was our expansion into the New York market. Starting from zero in a state like New York has definitely come with its challenges. Within a year of starting the company, I decided to move to New York from Atlanta to encourage the expansion of Nova Star Media. Although living in Atlanta was all I knew at the time, I felt the only way I could reach the pinnacle of the company’s success would be by taking the jump. Upon my arrival, it was clear I had to change my approach to how I originally operated Nova Star Media as the lifestyle is drastically new and fast paced. Thankfully, as things become more situated, my time in New York has become more tranquil and blissful. It’s been a blessing to say Nova Star Media now services in New York. Correspondingly, my sister sustains business operations in our founding state, Atlanta, Georgia. With both markets flourishing, we’re grateful to say we’ve been able to generate opportunities in addition to expanding our capital and network in both states.
