We recently connected with Oscar Barcelli and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Oscar thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I’m currently working on my music. I released my first album in October 2021 and since that moment I’ve been working on new music and also finding venues around LA to perform my music. My goal is to share the Afro-Peruvian music around the world and to give workshops about the Peruvian percussions.
Oscar, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Oscar Barcelli. I’m a professional drummer, composer and educator. I studied music at Souza Lima in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2014 and then at Berklee College of Music in Boston, US. I was awarded 3 times a scholarship by the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation. I have played at the Latin GRAMMYs 2019, The JEN Festival, Berklee Peformance Center, Saban Theatre, Downey Theatre and many more. I have released an album called King’s Lockdown in 2021 and a single called Kilka in 2023. I’ve played with famous artists such as Sofia Carson, Kurt Elling, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Victor Wooten, Oscar Stagnaro, Fausto Cuevas, Anibal Seminario, Lorenzo Ferrero and many more.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is to do what you love. I never feel that I’m actually working. I always have fun playing or writing music. To be able to play my own music live is the best feeling in the world and I wouldn’t change it for anything
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my audience by posting educational reels. I always do breakdowns of some drum patterns that are complicated and people like to have free lessons.
