We recently connected with Orchee Sorker and have shared our conversation below.
Orchee, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
The education system in the United States often places a strong emphasis on memorization rather than fostering creativity for several reasons. While it is important to note that not all schools or educators follow this approach, certain factors contribute to the prevalence of this trend (standardized testing, college admissions, etc.). In addition, due to the lack of exposure to information and expectations, students are unable to determine a career they are passionate and will excel the most in. The possibilities are limitless but it’s the educators’ job to open the door of information to the students.
For me, wanting to go into the creative field was a fantasy for me. I did not really know all the kinds of positions which existed in entertainment until halfway through my college career and after exploring opportunities outside of class. By that time, I did not get a chance to switch majors. Although now I am able to pursue graduate school in a field relating to entertainment business, I know deciding during your undergraduate time is the best and some people may not have the opportunity or be interested in pursuing another degree. That is why I think it is important to have a proper education system which allows students to become more innovative, passionate, and informative.
While the United States is indeed more open than some other countries, there is still room for improvement in the education system. Encouraging creativity, critical thinking, and a broader range of career exploration can lead to a more well-rounded and adaptable workforce that is better equipped to address the complex challenges of the modern world. Reforms that promote project-based learning, interdisciplinary education, and personalized learning paths can help nurture creativity and provide students with opportunities to explore their interests outside of the conventional career trajectory.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi I’m Orchee! I am a digital artist based in Nashville, Tennessee. My love for creating started when I received my first point-and-shoot camera at the age of 8. I took as many photos as I could. It was I documented life. By the age of twelve, I was given the opportunity to help edit event highlight videos for a local organization and ultimately started managing the audio-visual aspects of events by the time high school came around. I started my media business my sophomore year of high school. By the time I started college, I got hired by my high school to work as the multimedia consultant and also got the opportunity to work in press for a global pop culture publication. Now, I am aspiring to grow my business to an agency where artists, businesses, and brands can come to fulfill all things in advertising and promotions. My motto is that “you matter & so does your story”. I feel like a lot of us feel like we are small and life isn’t worth documenting, so I want to be able to help capture and share your story whether it is through photos, videos, or designs.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being a creative who creates all types of media, I think the most rewarding aspect is when my clients share their story with the help of my work and the outside viewers, fans, and public are able to resonate and engage with the content.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
One thing I wish I paid attention to were the fact that resources are everywhere. You just gotta look around and not be afraid to ask! There are so many people out there who are willing to share their advice and wisdom. You just have to fight the initial fear of reaching out! I absolutely love and feel honored if people come to me with questions! It can be your mutuals on socials or even the people you look up to. People feel good to share their knowledge. Just keep an open mind. Aside from reaching out to others, I found a door of opportunities being apart of a publication team. Being apart of Facebook and Discord groups along with staying active on Instagram has allowed me to connect with the creative community. For specific tutorials, I always resort to YouTube university. I, like many others, never had formal training in the creative world, so all my knowledge in Adobe Creative Cloud applications mostly comes from YouTube and the internet.
