Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Orazie Cook . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Orazie, thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
There was indeed a defining moment in my professional journey that led me to passionately pursue helping domestic violence survivors with pets. This pivotal moment occurred during my time working at a local domestic violence shelter and a humane society.
While at the domestic violence shelter, I witnessed firsthand the heartbreaking dilemma that many survivors faced. Some individuals were torn between seeking safety for themselves and staying in an abusive situation because they couldn’t bear the thought of leaving their beloved pets behind. It was heart-wrenching to see how the bond between these survivors and their pets became a barrier to them seeking the help they desperately needed.
Similarly, at the humane society, I encountered individuals who had to make the heart-wrenching decision to give up their pets due to unstable housing circumstances resulting from leaving an abusive partner. The pain and anguish in their eyes, as they parted ways with their pets, were unforgettable moments that deeply impacted me.
These experiences illuminated a significant gap in the support system for domestic violence survivors. The connection between individuals and their pets shouldn’t be a hindrance to seeking safety and rebuilding their lives. It became clear to me that there was a dire need for resources and solutions that would allow survivors to transition to safety without having to make such agonizing choices.
This realization became the driving force behind my commitment to founding Praline’s Backyard Foundation. Our mission is to provide a safe haven for the pets of domestic violence survivors during their transitional period, ensuring that survivors don’t have to sacrifice their pets’ well-being for their own safety. The defining moment I witnessed underscored the urgent need for such support, and it serves as a constant reminder of the resilience and strength of survivors, as well as the critical importance of creating a holistic and compassionate approach to addressing domestic violence.
Through this journey, I’ve learned that even seemingly small actions can have a profound impact on people’s lives. By addressing this specific issue, we’re not only providing practical help but also empowering survivors to take steps towards a better future for themselves and their beloved pets. The stories of these survivors continue to inspire me, and I’m dedicated to ensuring that no one has to choose between their safety and the well-being of their pet.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The past couple of years has been an awakening for all of us, unveiling the harsh realities of domestic violence cases surging during the pandemic. As I observed these distressing trends, I couldn’t help but reflect on my past experiences volunteering with domestic violence shelters and the local humane society. Memories of individuals making heart-wrenching decisions – returning to their abusers for the sake of their pets or reluctantly giving up their beloved pets due to unstable housing – flooded back.
These reflections prompted a deep introspection of my life choices. I realized that the time had come for me to make a meaningful contribution that could bridge the gap and offer a lifeline to those facing these unimaginable dilemmas. And thus, Praline’s Backyard Foundation was conceived.
At its core, our foundation aims to provide not just shelter, but a sanctuary for the pets of domestic violence survivors. We understand that the bond between humans and animals is profound and powerful, often providing solace and strength during the darkest hours. No one should have to make the agonizing choice between their safety and the well-being of their beloved pets.
Praline’s Backyard Foundation is built on the belief that compassion knows no bounds. We offer transitional housing for pets via pet boarding facilities and pet fosters, ensuring that survivors can seek safety without leaving their companions behind. Have you ever had to pivot?
There was a pivotal moment in the journey of Praline’s Backyard Foundation that fundamentally shaped our mission and approach. When I initially embarked on this endeavor, my vision was to establish a dog boarding facility right here in Georgia, dedicated to housing the pets of domestic violence survivors. The goal was to create a safe haven where survivors could transition with their pets overcoming the barriers that often kept them in harmful situations.
However, as with any ambitious endeavor, challenges emerged. Zoning regulations and intricate land development processes posed unexpected hurdles, and despite passionate efforts, the funds needed to establish the facility fell short. It was a moment of reflection and decision-making – do we give up or do we find an innovative path forward?
This pivotal crossroads led to a profound realization: the mission was far greater than a single location. It was about creating a nationwide network of support, reaching beyond Georgia’s borders and touching the lives of survivors and their pets across the entire country. This is when the pivot happened.
We shifted our focus to a partnership-based model, collaborating with existing pet boarding facilities scattered throughout different states. This pivot not only allowed us to overcome geographical constraints but also opened the doors to a larger community of compassionate individuals and businesses who shared our vision. By partnering with established facilities, we could leverage their expertise, resources, and reach to provide shelter and care to an even greater number of survivors and their pets.
This pivot wasn’t just a shift in strategy; it was a transformation of our core philosophy. It highlighted the power of community, unity, and adaptability. Today, I am immensely proud of the far-reaching impact we’re making, not just within Georgia, but across the nation. It’s a testament to the resilience of our team, the unwavering support of our partners, and the shared belief that every survivor deserves a path to safety – no matter where they are.
This experience taught me that pivots aren’t about setbacks; they’re about finding innovative ways to align even more closely with your mission. They remind us that challenges are opportunities in disguise, and that true success lies in the ability to adapt and grow, no matter the circumstances.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
A genuine passion for the cause and a deep empathy for the individuals we serve are paramount for success in our field. The work we do at Praline’s Backyard Foundation is not merely a profession; it’s a mission fueled by a heartfelt commitment to making a positive impact.
Understanding the intricate emotional, psychological, and practical challenges faced by domestic violence survivors and their pets goes beyond textbooks and formal education. It requires a compassionate perspective that drives every decision and action. This empathy forms the foundation of our approach, enabling us to connect with survivors on a deeper level, earn their trust, and provide the support they truly need.
Networking and forging alliances are equally crucial. Building relationships with fellow advocates, professionals, shelters, and pet care providers creates a web of support that amplifies our impact. Collaborative efforts not only extend our reach but also foster a sense of unity that strengthens the overall movement against domestic violence.
