We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful ooch Comedy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with ooch below.
Hi ooch, thanks for joining us today. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
Best thing we did was switch to digital platforms instead of live theaters. Best investment: buying expensive filming equipment, lights, green screens, microphones, editing software, etc. It was hard to get 50-100 butts in seats for our live shows, now we have tens of thousands of audience members online! Before Covid, we used to write, produce, and perform a new 30 minute sketch comedy show at various theaters in LA, like UCB and The Pack, but then Covid shut it all down. After some thought, we decided to focus on digital content. So we started meeting on Zoom, and making one minute videos for Instagram. The first one, an Avengers parody re-editing a scene from End Game, blew up pretty quickly gaining over 20,000 views from all over the world. Suddenly, we had a ton of fans in places like the Philippines and that certainly motivated us to continue. Now, even post covid, we continue to focus on digital content and the content has gotten pretty involved, like filming ourselves in front of green screens playing multiple characters and inserting ourselves into popular movies and tv series.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Nicole is a SAG-AFTRA actor and voice-over artist living in LA for over 16 years. She’s originally from Baltimore, Maryland. Nicole is also a professional oil painter, and sells her paintings on her Etsy shop, PaintbyWillig. She is also bilingual(English and Swedish). Matt is a software engineer from the bay area. Screenwriting and filmmaking became such a strong hobby that he moved to LA to be closer to the industry. Years ago, Nicole and Matt separately started taking classes at improv/sketch schools in LA(UCB, Groundlings, Second City, The Pack, and Nerdist). They both were on sketch comedy teams at different theaters at different times in their careers, but in 2015 they ended up getting put on the same sketch team at Nerdist School of Comedy.
As ooch Comedy, we provide short comedy videos to the public, similar to what you see on Saturday Night Live! We post our videos on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and YouTube. We write, produce, direct, and edit. Everything is done from scratch. We are the writers, directors, actors, editors. We do props, costumes, camera work, green screen, voiceovers, etc. Somethings we collaborate with our influencers, and sketch comedy actors. We even have a celebrity in our video!
Our goal is to make people laugh, and hopefully show them something they’ll never forget.
We focus on both original sketches with original sketch characters, and also sketches that reference all kinds of popular media, like Marvel, the NFL, and Netflix series.
We are most proud of the passionate fan base we’ve created. On Instagram we went from 100 followers to over 2,000 in a very short period of time. We do a good amount of promotion as well!
We make comedy content for everyone, so you should definitely check out our instagram page @oochcomedy.
How did you build your audience on social media?
To build our audience, the key is to make a catchy title with a thumbnail that is unexpected. That way you’ll get their attention. Then if the content is good, they’ll likely share it and/or follow our page. To keep the audience engaged, it’s important to interact with them in the comments and messages, and even take suggestions from them about the type of content we should create next. We’ve also done a giveaway with some of our ooch swag. It also helps to focus our material on trending topics, like Marvel, sports, celebrity drama, not yet released movies, politics, etc. Our videos also push the envelope, because you have to take risks.
The most rewarding part is seeing laughter or seeing a video get a big reaction in the comments. It makes us feel connected to people, by realizing they found something funny or weird that we also did. Life is tough, so it’s nice to feel like you’ve brightened someone’s day!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
We would love to make money doing these sketch videos. How you make money is by getting enough viewers/followers to attract companies and make them want to offer you paid ads.
