We recently connected with Onzie B and have shared our conversation below.
Onzie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Well, when I was 9 years old, I started taking piano lessons. I don’t exactly know why I wanted to play the piano, except for playing whatever I heard from the radio at the time. I would practice melody’s, trying to figure out the chord progressions by ear. Then I would relate the notes I heard to the visual notes on the piano, and I think in that moment that’s when things became clearer. I felt like I’m supposed to be doing music, and I wanted to dive into it more.

Onzie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Onzieb, and I’m originally from Hampton, VA. I majored in Music Education with An Emphasis In Media from Norfolk State University, and graduated in 2010. Thinking now, I miss college lol. It was here that I first got a taste of the music industry, and built relationships/rapports that are still solid today. After I graduated, I got an opportunity to work with the late/great Heavy D on his final studio album titled “Love Opus.” besides being a talented M.C., Heavy was a really cool down to earth individual. Those writing sessions showed me what industry writing sessions looked like, and I wanted to be involved in more it. I then got into sync licensing, writing and producing for T.V. shows and films. Some of my placements include the CW network, Netflix, Hulu, CBS Sports, and MAX. I’ll never forget the feeling I felt when I got the phone call that my song was going to be featured on “All American,” which is one of my favorite shows.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
There was a time after I graduated college that I worked a series of jobs. I was working a one particular grocery store, and I was trying to figure out how I was going to get home after my shift was over as I was low on gas. I remember sitting in my car, thinking of how I could change my situation for the better. This was one of those moments that I could put in the work to make it better, or just stay in the same wave of “what if’s,” I couldn’t be defeated. I kept working hard at what I wanted, and it all started coming together piece by piece. I knew then that in order to achieve cool things in life, I have to see my challenges as a puzzle and not as an obstacle.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I see goals as achievements that obtain great honor. I think everyone wants to reach their goals, but I want to see my goals as everyday lessons and moments. I’m a type of person that loves learning, and wanting to know more than what I see. Just like when I listen to a song over and over again, knowing that there’s going to be something in the song that I keep missing. That’s what drives me. I also do this for my family, as their support has always been continuous and unwavering.
