Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Onyi Mgbah. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Onyi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
During my first year as an ER nurse, I noticed how much time decreased between each patient assessment. There was never enough time to listen ask real questions or even care about anything that wasn’t what “brings you in today”. One particular day, I had a gentleman who was placed in my room terrified his blood pressure was out of control. By the time I got to him, his pressure was normal and he was not sure why. Throughout his visit, his wife sat at his bedside and they looked worried. I MADE the time and asked one question, “Did your doctor tell you how to take your medications?”. This was the beginning of my journey into wellness, preventive health and patient education. His answer that day showed me an obvious gap and a limited approach to true healing or recovery. Most patients will remain patients all their lives because there is no plan or option for restoring health and our current system only treats sickness. My passion started that day and has grown daily since then with every patient, case and family member I meet daily.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a registered nurse with over half a decade of acute and chronic care experience in caring for people. Part of my journey has allowed me to work in multiple states in the country, with multicultural and multigenerational teams. I have learned a lot of hands-on skills from some of the most prestigious hospitals and it all led me to wellness nursing. Today, I still work in the healthcare system while creating a service for the people I cannot reach when I am clocked in.
The services we provide at BioWise Wellness Solutions are with the mission of Restoring Health and Promoting Wellness in communities and companies. Some of these services are personalized wellness testing, health coaching, nutrition counseling and planning including patient advocacy through education. We solve the problem of a generalized aproach to care.
Our company is founded on the premise that no two people are the same and should be treated as individuals. That is what sets us apart from the traditional clinics, we are a wellness focused company with no limit on time and access to resources that help us find the answer to your specific concern. We build relationships with our clients because from our experience working in the healthcare system, people should matter. So if it matters to you, it matters to us.
I am most proud of the team we have built. Our values and interests align so it shows in how we care. We measure our success based on how we impact our communities and if we made your life better. Your tests and services are tailored to your concerns medical or not because it doesn’t have to be life threatening to be urgent or important to you. All our clients learn that life and good health is a privilege that everyone can enjoy even if it’s on different terms. We want to help you take back your health and become an active partner in your wellbeing so we have made access to testing and therapies convenient and comprehensive.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
In my specific field, empathy and professionalism are invaluable! I take care of people every single day yet I am still shocked at how difficult it can be to offer help to someone who obviously needs it. People are challenging and most times, just scared. Putting my personal feelings aside to notice the person in front of me, goes a long way in building trust and creating a mutually beneficial experience. The professionalism goes without saying, how I speak to my patients and clients shape the entire experience. It can be hard to trust a stranger but it’s easier when that stranger has a professional confidence and attitude.

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Yes! I would definitely be a nurse again and again! The best part of nursing is the flexibility to fulfil your passion. When I started, I thought being an Emergency Room nurse would be the means to an end. Now, I am a Wellness Nurse who can help heal my community by proactively empowering the people I did not have time to talk to in the hospital due to being overwhelmed with tasks and never ending inflow of patients. Nursing created the opportunity to build a business that actually lets me use my skills and gifts to improve and impact lives.
