We recently connected with Onur Kirimli and have shared our conversation below.
Onur, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
One of the key ways Kilim Couture New York diverges from industry standards is through our deeply personal and curated approach. Unlike large retailers that prioritize mass production and uniformity, every piece in my collection is handpicked for its artistry, heritage, and authenticity. I focus on one-of-a-kind, artisan-made pieces that aren’t just beautiful but also tell a story—something you won’t find in big-box stores or even many boutique brands.
Another way we differ is in the relationships we build. I work directly with artisans and their communities in Turkey, ensuring that their craftsmanship is celebrated and their livelihoods are supported. This personal connection to the source of my products allows me to share their stories with my clients, creating a sense of meaning and purpose behind each purchase.
We also prioritize a highly personalized customer experience. From offering custom consultations to helping clients select the perfect piece for their home, I ensure that every interaction is warm, intentional, and tailored to the client’s needs. For example, I’ve had clients who wanted specific kilim decor pieces for a special project, and I personally sourced exactly what they envisioned—something larger companies rarely have the flexibility to do.
What makes this difference matter is the connection it creates. Customers aren’t just buying a rug—they’re becoming part of a story that spans cultures and generations. It’s deeply rewarding to see how these pieces transform not just their spaces but also their appreciation for the art and history behind them.
By staying true to this philosophy, Kilim Couture New York offers something beyond the industry standard—a blend of heritage, artistry, and personalized care that resonates with clients in a meaningful way.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Onur Kirimli, and I’m the founder and owner of Kilim Couture New York, a brand that celebrates the artistry, heritage, and timeless beauty of antique and vintage rugs and kilims. My journey into this industry began in Turkey, where I grew up surrounded by the rich culture of handwoven textiles. Rugs and kilims have always held a special place in my heart—they are not just functional items but works of art, steeped in history and tradition.
After moving to New York City, I saw an opportunity to bring these incredible pieces to a broader audience, blending old-world craftsmanship with modern interior design aesthetics. That’s how Kilim Couture New York was born. I focus on curating a carefully selected collection of artisan-made rugs, kilims, and mid-century decor pieces, all handpicked from Turkey. Each item is unique, with its own story, character, and charm.
What sets my work apart is my commitment to authenticity and connection. Every rug in my collection is a testament to the skill and passion of the artisans who created it. I work directly with these artisans and their communities, ensuring fair compensation and celebrating their craft. By doing so, I’m not just offering beautiful pieces; I’m also preserving a cultural legacy and supporting livelihoods.
For my clients, I aim to solve a few key challenges. First, I help them find one-of-a-kind pieces that bring warmth, texture, and character to their spaces—something mass-produced rugs simply can’t achieve. Second, I provide a highly personalized experience, whether it’s helping them choose the perfect rug for their home or collaborating with interior designers through our trade program.
What I’m most proud of is the impact my work has on both ends of the spectrum. On one side, I’m helping artisans in Turkey sustain their centuries-old traditions, and on the other, I’m helping clients create homes that feel meaningful, unique, and full of character.
If there’s one thing I want people to know about Kilim Couture New York, it’s that our rugs are more than just decor—they’re pieces of art and heritage. They carry the stories of the artisans who made them, and they have the power to transform any space into something extraordinary.
Whether you’re looking for a statement rug to anchor your room, a delicate kilim bench to add charm, or simply a connection to something authentic and beautiful, I’m here to help you find that perfect piece.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One moment that stands out in my journey with Kilim Couture New York is when I was first trying to establish my brand in a highly competitive market. I vividly remember sourcing my initial collection of rugs and kilims—it was a labor of love, filled with countless trips to artisan workshops, markets, and remote villages in Turkey. Each piece I selected felt special, but I underestimated the challenges of introducing these works of art to a new audience in New York City.
In the beginning, sales were slow. Many potential clients didn’t immediately understand the value of these handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces compared to mass-produced rugs. On top of that, shipping fragile, oversized items internationally presented logistical challenges that, at times, felt overwhelming. There were moments when I questioned whether I had taken on more than I could handle.
What kept me going was my belief in the quality and cultural significance of the work. I doubled down on educating clients—sharing the stories behind the rugs, the meaning of their motifs, and the painstaking craftsmanship involved in their creation. I also focused on building personal connections, offering consultations, and tailoring the experience to individual clients’ needs.
One pivotal moment came when I sold a large, antique rug to a client who later wrote to tell me how it had transformed her living room and become a cherished part of her home. That feedback was a reminder of why I started this journey—to create something meaningful and lasting for my clients while supporting the artisans behind the craft.
The resilience I’ve developed through these challenges has shaped the way I approach my work today. Each setback has been an opportunity to refine my processes, build stronger relationships, and stay true to my vision. It’s not always easy, but the joy of seeing my rugs bring warmth and character to people’s homes makes every challenge worthwhile.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe my reputation within the market has been built on three key pillars: authenticity, quality, and personalized service.
First, authenticity has always been at the core of Kilim Couture New York. Every piece in my collection is artisan-made and handpicked from Turkey, ensuring that it reflects the rich history and craftsmanship of the region. Sharing the unique stories behind each rug—the motifs, the weaving techniques, and the artisans’ traditions—resonates deeply with clients who value meaningful and one-of-a-kind items.
Second, the uncompromising quality of my pieces has played a major role. From the selection process to the care I take in presenting each item, clients know they are receiving a product that is not only beautiful but also crafted to last generations. This commitment to excellence has earned the trust of both individual clients and interior designers, who rely on me for standout pieces that elevate their spaces.
Finally, the personal relationships I’ve built with my clients have been crucial. I make it a priority to understand their needs and provide tailored recommendations that align with their style and vision. Whether it’s a first-time buyer or a returning client, I strive to offer a memorable and positive experience that goes beyond just the transaction. Small touches, like handwritten notes or thoughtful follow-ups, leave a lasting impression and show clients that I truly care.
One example that stands out is a high-end interior designer who trusted me to source several kilim decor pieces for a project in a luxury home. The success of that collaboration not only solidified our professional relationship but also led to referrals that expanded my client base.
Ultimately, what has helped me build my reputation is staying true to my values, being consistent in my work, and always putting my clients and the artisans I work with at the center of everything I do.
