We recently connected with Oneshia Edens and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Oneshia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
I’m a Clean Christian Comedian and a lot of times it’s so hard to break through because there is no cuss words sexual topics and etc. Even when you are wanting to have your moment on a stage with comics that are veterans in the game I have been asked why don’t you cuss you could be making more money getting more bookings and people would follow you! My response is always I DONT HAVE TO CUSS…. I’m funny ENOUGH. Didn’t you laugh? See I’m winning and trust me when God is ready for me to make it Big (in your eyes) he will! But God is faithful and true and I love it 🥰

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m A Clean Comedian and Radio Personality I have been doing comedy since 2006 and a radio personality since 2015! I have the best of both worlds I’m able to host anything from a government events wedding receptions baby showers church events and funerals. Yes you read it correctly I have been requested to tell jokes at funerals. Those are my most challenging moments while the family is grieving I have to make them smile through the pain! That’s what is important to me is making sure I do what is required to push through and making sure those around me smile! That’s what makes me different I can be whatever I need to be at the moment for the moment to make everyone laugh! I remember doing comedy at a church gala and when I was finished I had a beautiful seasoned (elderly) woman grab my arm and said I haven’t laughed in a long time and you have blessed me and thank you. That means alot to me!

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Give US a chance! If I could scream this from the mountain top I would but I’m not about that climb life! Being a single black plus size woman in the entertainment world is hard sometimes because society tends to not show support because your name is not in big lights or you don’t fit the image of being a model citizen lol 😂 but what is that? I believe we are all talented and gifted and given a chance to show the world we would be a better place! Being a plus size woman I get the looks like whoa I hope she funny or I hope she don’t talk about food! I’m going to do it all and you will laugh! I believe if society step outside of the box and allow those who are just starting out a chance we could crunch the whole image idea!

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My son is my driving force! Jakevis Thomason keeps me wanting to be better and do better so when I leave this earth I will leave him with memories of me making the world a better place with laughter and smiles… Now I will say he must tell the world I made a difference in this world while eating an oatmeal pie and wearing Chuck Taylors
