We recently connected with Omri (stage name: DE SOFFER) Soffer and have shared our conversation below.
Omri (stage name: DE SOFFER), thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
It all started somewhere almost 20 years ago. I was just a 10-year-old boy and my older brother had just brought home his first professional DJ equipment.
Ever since then I have had a love affair with technology and I remember looking at it – it looked like something from the future. That’s just how it was. I remember looking forward to the first night when my brother left the house to meet his friends and then I actually remember opening up the equipment and starting to touch the buttons and teach myself what to do by feel. since then I just embraced evenings full of music that dragged me into this world.
In those days there were not large amounts of DJs common in Tel Aviv like today, and my older brother was one of them.
Later my brother adopted me as his assistant and from there I started my way.
I was very lucky to grow up by professional company.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Omri aka DE SOFFER, I can say that I start the day with a smile because I’m doing what I have passion with.
I am a remixer, producer and DJ who plays and creates the music he loves but it wasn’t always like that.
My story may have started 20 years ago, but it got its turning point 5 years ago.
I was at a crazy festival in Croatia somewhere in 2018. I remember looking at all the DJs that performed with envy. And I said to myself one day at the festival “what stops you from playing on these big stages”. At that time I had nothing to do with creation at all. At that moment I swore to myself that I would not remain indifferent to what I could do.
The first hour I landed at home – I checked about music creation courses and my heart simply told me to sign up.
Four and a half years later – my remixes are played by thousands of DJs all over the world.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I know that the first thing that motivates me to do something is to love what I do. It really is a law of life. I remember when I started making music and the industry was simply prevalent in Israel with DJs creating techno music and it’s still like that today. I remember telling myself it’s really not me. Music has much more to give than that for me.
And there were many, many people who recognized my potential in the beginning who tried to push me to be another one doing what everyone else was doing. I didn’t connect with this thing so much – it’s not me.
I believed in my path so much. I am so happy that today people tell me that they hear something that I touched and they know how to recognize my sound color among everyone in Israel and in the world in general.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
There is nothing more rewarding in the world than seeing thousands of people dancing to something I touched. Every day I receive dozens of videos of my remixes being played all over the world.
It’s really a pride.
