Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Omolara Oloye-Adelusi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Omolara thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Pursuing a passion for business can be a big risk, especially if you have a day job and are deciding to work less than full-time hours to create time for your craft. However, taking risks is often necessary to achieve success and fulfillment in life.
In my own experience as a cake artist, I had to take a leap of faith and pursue my passion for baking and decorating, even though it wasn’t initially a sustainable career path. I had to find a way to balance my day job with my creative pursuits, and it wasn’t always easy.
However, my passion for cake artistry and my belief in myself kept me motivated and inspired to keep going. I knew that if I continued to work hard and stay dedicated to my craft, I could turn my passion into a successful business.
Taking risks can be scary, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. When we take a chance on ourselves and our dreams, we open ourselves up to new opportunities and experiences that we may never have had otherwise.
So for anyone considering taking a risk to pursue their passion, I would encourage them to take that leap of faith and trust in themselves. It may not always be easy, but it can lead to incredible growth and fulfillment in the long run

Omolara, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My journey as a cake artist began during my college days when I discovered my passion for baking. At that time, I started baking cakes as a hobby and my friends and coursemates were my first customers for their birthdays and other special occasions.
As a self-taught baker and cake artist, I have always been drawn to the creativity and beauty of cake design. Although I didn’t have a formal education in baking or pastry arts, my passion for creating visually stunning and delicious desserts inspired me to pursue this craft on my own.
In addition to self-education, I sought out professional training and workshops to develop my skills further. I took classes in baking and designing cakes. I learned from industry leaders in the field. This helped me to build my knowledge and develop new techniques that would allow me to create more complex and visually stunning cakes.
Perhaps most importantly, I learned to embrace the science and creative process of cake baking from scratch and designs. I experimented with ingredients and flavor combinations and allowed my imagination to guide my craft. I found that by exploring different themes and ideas, I was able to create cakes that were not only delicious but also beautiful, unique, and memorable
However, I am also a nurse practitioner and I knew that it would be challenging to pursue baking as a full-time career because the other path is also fulfilling. So, I started exploring ways to make it work part-time, by devising a flexible work system that would allow me to balance my professional commitments and pursue my passion for baking.
My personality and nursing background enables me to connect easily with clients both as a nurse practitioner and a cake artist. Being able to connect with and care for a patient draws a parallel with being able to satisfy the delectable appetite of my cake customers because both field requires a holistic approach . I strongly believe that my professions complements each other, and this gives me a sense of purpose and fulfillment
Social media visibility, customer satisfaction, and positive word of mouth quickly led to a surge in orders, which presented its own set of challenges in terms of managing capacity. Despite the demands, I take great pride and joy in baking from scratch and continuing to improve my craft, paying careful attention to each client’s needs and desires, ensuring that every cake I create is a unique and memorable work of art.
The appreciation and gratitude that I receive from my clients is also incredibly rewarding. Knowing that I’ve played a small part in making someone’s special occasion even more memorable and meaningful is a truly fulfilling experience

How did you build your audience on social media?
Building a social media audience as a cake artist can be a challenging but rewarding process. It requires dedication, perseverance, and resilience, as well as a deep understanding of your audience and what they want to see from you.
One of the most important things I’ve learned is to be present on social media, particularly Instagram, where I post more reels than pictures. I’ve observed that viewers want to see your work and the process behind it, so I make sure to share behind-the-scenes content and show my followers how I create my beautiful cakes.
Another important factor is consistency. I post many reels every day, which helps to put me in front of interested people’s faces. I’ve seen an increase in followers as a result, and I equate my followers to potential clients directly or indirectly.
It’s difficult to understand the Instagram algorithm and how it works. While there’s no magic formula for success, I’ve found that consistent posting and engagement are key. Even if there are no likes or comments, people still see my posts, and I know that every interaction helps to build my brand and reputation over time.
Ultimately, building a social media audience takes time, effort, and patience. It’s important to be yourself, stay true to your brand, and keep sharing your beautiful cakes and creative process with the world. With dedication and persistence, you can build a loyal following and grow your business as a cake artist

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As a cake artist, the most rewarding part of my work is the sense of joy and fulfillment that comes from creating something beautiful and unique for my clients. The act of baking and decorating cakes keeps me focused and engaged, and allows me to tap into my creativity in a way that is truly therapeutic and nourishing to my soul.
There’s something incredibly satisfying about taking simple ingredients like flour, sugar, and eggs, and transforming them into a stunning work of art that can bring joy and happiness to others. Whether it’s a loaf cake, towering wedding cake or a whimsical birthday cake, each creation is a testament to my skill, passion, and dedication to my craft.
The appreciation and gratitude that I receive from my clients is also incredibly rewarding. Knowing that I’ve played a small part in making someone’s special occasion even more memorable and meaningful is a truly fulfilling experience.
At the end of the day, being a cake artist is a gift and a privilege. It allows me to connect with my craft on a deep level, and to share my passion and creativity with others in a way that brings happiness and beauty into the world.
