We caught up with the brilliant and insightful OmiO a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, OmiO thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
We’ve been gathering information our whole lives. The know how of making sounds is something that comes natural to us. By us, we mean the collective us… you (the reader) included. Instruments can be taught, and honestly the moment you actually learn your instrument you start to suck at it. The learning process, similar to the creative process, requires the humility and wonder of a child. You can’t speed it up, or slow it down. You learn as you fail. Fail over and over again. That’s the only real skill you need, is failing. The moment you think you wrote the song or made the painting is the moment you’re getting it wrong. You’re a conduit, be grateful, not proud.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We’ had been sleeping for years. We woke up about a 180 years ago. We met in passing at different times. Which in hindsight seems serendipitous, but at the moment we didn’t really think much of it. One day we got together to play some songs and well… it happened. We jammed. We jammed hard, and for a long time.
OmiO is comprised of 4 members Alex Zietë, Bobby Storbakken, David Bethany, and Omar Otero. Together we offer ourselves to the sound muses. Then share its loving energy, with the inhabitants of this cold, but beautiful world.
We’ve been at it since day one (your time). We’ve been around. Involved in your day to day. Collecting information, to one day help you. We think that maybe People are open to listen now. We believe music can change the course you’re on as a race. We’ve seen it work for generations past, and it will happen again. We are grateful to be a part of that change. Till death do us part.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Our mission is simple. We’re here to break a cycle. Humanity lives in Cyclical cynicism. You’ve been condition to expect the worst, and fight for the best. You’ve been thought to be happy with a life that is spent pursuing happiness as opposed to just being happy. We’re here to show gratitude for the present moment. To give you a space to be “here”.
Your government is active this year. Telling you all about your future, and using your past against you. Making you fight over promises that are as empty as their hearts. We are your space away from that. All we care about making sounds that will accompany you through this crazy time, and see you through future ones. Timeless things don’t fit in cycles. That’s what we want to create.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Rewarding is a hard word. We as artist are aware that this is in fact a thankless job. At least it should be… But it is nice to know that in order to accomplish anything you need people. And when we put on a show, and invite our friends to play with us, or to cook a bunch of food for everyone, or to sell their art alongside ours, we’re helping create a community. Their work and effort alongside ours is something we can’t take credit for but it is nice to be a part of a talent packed community of humans.
