Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Omid Rejali. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Omid, appreciate you joining us today. Early in your career, how did you think through the decision of whether to start your own firm or join an established firm?
I started my firm immediately after I passed the bar exam in 2014. There were a number of reasons I made that decision. First, I felt I had fell behind my goals because it took me four tries to pass the bar exam. Second, I could never see myself working for the man. So, I thought why even try.
Looking back, I would not change anything because that was my choice and my way. I will say however, if you plan on going out on your own if you can (and you’re not like me :)), work some place for three years. Get the experience. Make some money. Save your money. Get some good mentors. And then go out on your own. It would be much easier that way. I never liked easy. So, I did it my way.
The first few years where extremely difficult. It was the fight for survival every day. There would be months that I would be worried about making both rents (office and apartment), but it always would work out at the end. It seems as though, once you set out to do something and really put your mind to it, the universe helps you in obtaining your goals.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m just an average human being who have been able to find my purpose and mission in life. I found that purpose, believe it or not while I was experiencing a manic episode. I saw myself as a protector of the people. Ever since I was a child I also would get very frustrated when I saw something I felt was not fair. And so, I was destined to be the person who levels the playing field.
I think what sets me a part is I never back down. It does not matter who is on the other side. If I believe what I am saying is right, I am going to stand on it and make sure the opponent hears the message.
I’m most proud of what I am building in my practice. It has been my dream and vision for years. I’ve worked extremely hard to build it and I look forward to helping as many people as I can with my God given talents.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
During a trial that we had in 2019, we obtained a verdict in favor of our client. The court however later decided to take away half of the verdict because it determined substantial evidence did not support the verdict.
Our adversaries won that battle. And we appealed.
The court of appealed ended up reversing the lower courts decision and reinstating the jury’s verdict.
Have you ever had to pivot?
In October of 2022 we lost a trial that we had invested approximately $150,000 in. That was a devastating blow to the firm. And so, to make sure we survived, we had to pivot and restructure the firm. We did that, and not only did we survive, we started thriving.
