Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Omarr Kaba. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Omarr, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I first knew I wanted to pursue a musical career during my freshman year of high school. Me and my best friend Josh were extremely inspired by rap artists like Chance the Rapper & Kendrick Lamar and we wanted to be rappers ourselves. However, it became very clear to me that rap was not for me & I subsequently changed to strictly being a singer. Music has always been a very major part of my life. As a child, I played the drums and sang in church. I’ve literally been singing my whole life, but for some reason singing didn’t register in my mind as my “path” so to speak until I got to high school. in high school I did any and everything related to music that I could find. I was in the marching band for all four years of high school, choir, concert band, jazz band, select vocal ensemble (advanced choir), I performed in talent shows and assemblies.

Omarr, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into music at a very young age. I taught myself how to play the drums and I played in Church growing up. I also sang in the children’s, men’s, and adults choirs in church. I started recording original music in college, with the help of a friend of mine, who was a sound engineering major. I sing, write & produce R&B music.
I am most proud of the music that I have released on all platforms (my EP entitled “The Second Impression”). I want potential clients/followers/fans to know that I genuinely care about music and am very intentional. I take music and my work in music very seriously. The way I see it is: music has the power to change lives (both the lives of the creators and the consumers). My greatest hope is that people feel refreshed and moved after listening to my music.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to make music that helps you get through hard times in life. For example, when I was in my last year of college, I was in the process of creating my EP. One of the songs on my EP is entitled “Try Again”. On that song, I am talking about not giving up when facing hardships in life and persevering. At that point in my life, I was very overwhelmed. The school I was attending, was trying to keep me there longer because of credits, the pandemic was in full effect, and my house was full and very loud, which made it very difficult for me to focus on my studies. My song literally helped me push through all of the negativity around me and finish strong. What good is an inspirational song if you can’t find inspiration in it yourself as the creator of it?

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Last month during the first week of 2024, I got a new phone. (A little backstory, I use my phone to produce, and record music)
Before I wiped off all of the data on my old phone, I purposely backed up my files, so that when they transferred to my new phone, nothing would be out of place. Unbeknownst to me, all of the music that I’ve made over the past three years got deleted. When I realized this, I cried and panicked. In that moment, I wanted to give up on music. Instead, I persevered, and I started creating new music. And because of my perseverance, I am almost finished writing a brand new, EP of music that I will be releasing this year!
