We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Omar Nunez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Omar below.
Alright, Omar thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
One of the biggest risks I have taken is quitting the day job. It was around 2015 after buying our first home that I decided to take the leap and say goodbye to the day job and pursue DJing full time. I started DJing when I was in high school and throughout the years I had built a brand around my name and built a business around it. From rocking bars and clubs to DJing for high-end events and weddings, I was getting booked more and more. At this point, the day job was more of a security plan and I had already been thinking of taking the leap. The catalyst for me saying good bye to the day job was the fact that I needed a particular day off to DJ an event. The bosses wouldn’t give it to me so I took it as a sign and turned in my resignation letter. Even though there have been some struggles and hurdles, I haven’t looked back!

Omar, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Since I started DJing as such a young age, I have seen the music and entertainment scene change and evolve. One thing I will say, my passion for music hasn’t changed one bit. I got my start as most DJs or creatives do, dabbling in something new and exciting. For me it was mixing music and playing to a crowd. If you listen to some of my first mixes, you’d cover your ears, but as time went on and my skill grew, I gained the knowledge and experience to perform and provide an experience to fans, clients and party-goers that they can truly enjoy. Going on more than two decades of DJing, I have seen a lot and been part of many different events. That led me to create my company, Nufusion Productions. The idea behind the company was to fuse real DJ talent with professional customer service. Aside from still DJing at notable clubs and bars, I, and my company DJ for high-end events and weddings.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
With the world moving so fast in the online realm, the best thing to do is like, comment, share, and follow. It’s not everyday that you need a DJ, or need to book a DJ. Most clients only book a wedding DJ once in their life. So how can you support after the event is done? Refer them and share their online profiles–it just takes a tap on a screen.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
If I only knew then, what I know now… Where to start. A big one is business and financials in general. How to start an LLC, how to build and maintain a website, where to even go to start a website, how to file your taxes. I’ve always been a hands-on kind of person, so I would search for answers on my own, ask questions and seek inspiration from others. I would always pick the brains of those who were where I wanted to be. If you’re lucky, you’ll find the right person to tell you the right thing that will propel you to the next level. Ask as much as possible and read books on the topic you’re interested in. I wish I would have read more books at an earlier stage. Autobiographies for inspiration of other entrepreneurs, business books for branding and growth strategy, webinars on a particular topic (sales, social media and marketing). A lot of these things are online now, so do some research and take advantage of the resources that are out there and available to you.
