We recently connected with Omar Lopez and have shared our conversation below.
Omar, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One meaningful project that I adventured on was my first ever YouTube video. Ever since I was young I would fantazise on being able to make my own vlogs and videos about me. I’d see people like Max Taylor who not only had a great presence but an incredible editing presence aswell and desire to be them one day. Well not too long after I decided to try it out. I wasnt sure what I was going to film who would do it but I was dedicated to achieve this dream after letting it be a dream for so long. So with much shyness and anxiousness I had I decided to carry a camera infornt of my face around the store, around my parents, and around my friends. I felt so uncomfortable and uncovered. Like I was naked infront of an audience and it felt like that the whole way from editing the video to the release where I wasn’t sure what people around me would say. After recording a weekend of fun, gym, and experiences. I sat down and edited hours of video into a 20 min video full of edits, life, and me. I remember sitting at the computer for days and not sleeping for two days straight. I was obsessed. But when that video went up and I saw the thumbnail on my channel I was filled with a sense of satisfaction and pride that I had done that. Now looking back I’ve advanced much more in my personal journey to where I’m not afraid to put myself out there no more and I’m excited to pick up where I left off after months of working on myself, on modeling and acting and get back to the dream of putting my life on display. 2024 will be a great year of self discovery, self creation. And it will all be in Omar Complex
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Omar M Lopez but people call me MARS. I am 18 years young and I act, model, sing, dance, learning to play the piano, edit my own YouTube videos, and just have an immense love for arts and for creation. I started this journey after I left high school. Motivated by the experience I had doing theatre, and by the need to express myself, and my creativity I started looking for a way I could make acting and creating my life. Ive always had ideas that I knew where different and my understanding of life was so unique because it had no limits so I inherihertly saw no risk in trying stuff. I knew that with dedication time and belief anything was possible and I knew it was there there was no reason I didn’t believe. This belief and philosophy has lead me to know working on my own film “Serenity” set to release summer of 2024, building my own YouTube channel called Omar Complex, and creating this unique brand called Theatre Kid based around the idea of not being one dimensional.
One of the things that I’ve learned upon this journey has been the importance of removing yourself from the equation and putting the focus on the srt. It’s easy as a model to want to do it for yourself. To see your pictures wearing a cool outfit and essentially do it for that ego that wants recognition and while that is important and completely natural to desire, In the modeling world a model is simply the canvas to display the art not the other way around. whatever identity you’ve taken on- your there to express the outfit a Skelton for a body a body for a shirt a face for a mask and get people to feel inclined to look at the outfits to see the emotion behind them to see themselves wearing it and motivate them to buy a piece an accessory a shirt. Your goal as a model is to remove yourself from the picture and create a vision/a character for the style. My walk will never be the same unless its for the same outfit same designer. My walk is different in every show because every show is different.
Other things I’ve learned on this journey have been to let go of expectation and just have fun. Whenever your force or rush art wether its a painting, movie, video, outfit, or whatnot you must do it to the best of your ability and as authentic to the source to yourself as you can. Thats the beauty of it. Art is nothing but the trust form of expression so never let it be destroyed due to time constraints or other people’s opinions.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Most p[eople won’t understand the amount of mental work it takes to get to a position where you quote on quote can have it all. Its easy to disregard the past and the inner work that people have gone through because they cant see it. Alike a bamboo tree the creative path tends to be more all over the place than linear as baboo spreads it’s roots for years before exploding into the sky like the plant that it is. When you choose to take a chance on your dreams your going to have to face a lot of obstacles that can be challenging wether its your own self belief. Weather its your own arrogance and egoism, weather its your physical insecurity or your voice. Your going to have to face it. People are going to see you cry, crumble, fail, and that’s ok; its should be because no one is perfect and the more you try to be the less you will win. Your your own worst enemy and you have to face yourself, your past, your ego, your surrounds, your insecurities and more and when you do that you will see that everything else will fall into place. alot overlook the interwork that happens between a dreamer and the point where that dream become real. A journey of a child to an adult a boy from a man, Thats what ive been going through and im exciting to start this new chapter in my life
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is being free to espress yourself and be a kid again. So many people try to pretend like there too grown for drawing, for dancing, for signing, for acting. As an actor I get to be paid to play dress up with people, as a model I get paid to have fun and walk and put on a show, as a singer I get paid to sing my heart out and be free to say whatever I want. I really like how in art you dont have to follow any rules and its ok. you can make a song about your story and your experiences on this world and it’s called authentic, you can draw a horrifying demon face and make a music video of gore and its artsy, you can doodle lines and dotes with no direction and its visionary. You can dress up as a banana and its fashion and you can take that banana on a wall and call it the most genius painting of the century. Honestly I like that in this area of autonomy anyone can be a genius and your worth really isn’t valued on how good of a picture you can paint its on how creative and out of the box it can be so that the most rewarding aspect for me. This is not to say that it still takes work. As an artist you going to have to study, practice, dedicate incredible amounts of time to learn and understand yourself and the craft but overall there are no barriers or limits to what art can mean and once again it’s why it’s such a treasure to me
