We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Omar Akhter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Omar, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I established my own practice four years ago and it’s been a beautiful journey for me to see all the lives I’ve been able to touch and to witness my own personal growth during this time. No other experience in medicine compares to what it’s like to start and run your own practice. It’s almost like raising your own child. You, and only you have full responsibility and can watch it grow and see yourself grow as a result. I can’t wait to see how many more potential patients that are frustrated with our current medical system I can help.
Omar, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an internal medicine physician, who started a cash pay private practice in Austin, which has now moved to Cedar Park. I take a holistic approach to seeing patients and try to individualized care for each my patients in a manner that looks at them as a whole, and not tunneled into one particular specialty or system. I focus on hormones like thyroid, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and many more. I try to make my patients feel as well as possible, and work to optimize their health in the best way possible. I’m mainly trying to help patients who are looking for a better approach to their care and dissatisfied with the current healthcare system that doesn’t give them enough time, expertise, and personalization.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My main strength is my ability to connect with patients and provide them an environment that makes them feel heard and cared for. Patients often tell me they appreciate my calm demeanor, how much time I give them, and how attentively I am listening to their details. They also appreciate a plan that is holistic in nature, including aspects of diet, lifestyle, and using certain supplements, all of which can help them achieve better health.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Much of what I was taught in medical school and residency training was not always correct. We are often trained in a certain way that can be biased and what I learned later on in my career after training is that there might be a better approach to health that was not taught to me earlier. This involved me going on a journey of self discovery and learning, and that journey has continued to date.
