We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Olympia Papageorgiou a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Olympia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
While growing up, I was always surrounded by music and creativity! My parents are both musically inclined, my great grandfather and grandfather were also very musical. I have an Aunt who is also a professional singer/performer. Music has always existed for me. Because of this, I knew I wanted to continue singing throughout my life and always found ways to implement it in my life. Throughout school, I joined choir, performances and had private lessons as well. When I realized I wanted to pursue it more professionally was in high school when a friend introduced me to recording equipment and I recorded my first cover song. I knew that I never wanted to stop after that!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello there reader! I am Olympia Papageorgiou, I am a recording artist and Doctoral student studying Clinical Psychology. I work with a wonderful team who supports me with my music endeavors and we are always trying to find new ways to promote, create and network. My music is a mix of styles, anything from R&B to international pop. I love to mix in my Greek culture and language in my music here and there and love incorporating other world sounds as well.
I have always been interested in music but I became officially interested in Psychology while in middle school. I decided that I wanted to continue my studies after college and pursue a doctorate so that I could conduct therapy with patients. I also hope to serve my Greek Community in the future in this field and offer a non-secular perspective to therapy.
Pursuing both has been quite a journey with learning how to manage my time and also resting when I need it. It can be tiring pursuing both goals is what I want to do.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Starting off, I was learning ways that you could promote your music and hopefully gain more listening ears. One thing I found very helpful was submitting to different blogs and playlists online without having to pay! I wish I would have known how to access those resources earlier on because it can be very pricey to be an independent artist. Now, I send music every week in hopes that it will be placed and listened to. There is so much information online from different professionals and artists that it is definitely worth your time to do a little research each day about a topic you are invested in wether that it is music promotion, playlists, social media etc.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I am always in the process of growing and nurturing my audience and one way that helps is to share more than just my music and psychology journey. I share my life in other ways, my faith, activities and behind the scenes of my creativity. Share more than just “listen to my new song” because that can quickly fatigue your audience. Sharing a story about myself and my creativity has always been helpful and people get to know you beyond just “here is my new song.”. I am always willing to help if anyone wants to learn more about this topic so definitely send me a DM and we can have a chat about it!
