We were lucky to catch up with Oly recently and have shared our conversation below.
Oly, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I’ve been working as a full time clothing designer and seamstress for the last 10 years. I began my business when I was 17yrs old, just barely out of high school. I’m a third generation seamstress/creative and have been practicing my craft since the ripe age of 4. My grandma use to help me make little wrap skirts for all my dolls. I’ve been passionate about sewing ever since. I knew I wanted this to be my career by the time I was 13 and every step I took was towards that goal. I remember the day I decided to quit my job and go full time with my art. It was definitely a little nerve racking even at such a young age but I had a lot of support from my friends and family. I began a social media account to share my work and it started to pick up from there. I continued to work hard and share my creative passions and people seemed to really resonate with my works. I wouldn’t change a thing about my journey as a full time artist. The process constantly shows me new ways of evolution with this career path and I’m very grateful for that.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Oly, like the skateboard trick. I’m 27years old and I’ve been a full time seamstress / clothing designer behind Cosmic Sun for the last 10 years. Sewing has always been a huge part of my life. My grandmother is also a professional seamstress and designer and it’s something I’ve just always felt called to. I like to describe my works as psychedelic streetwear! I create using mostly repurposed fabrics found in thrift stores or remnant bins. I’m the sole proprietor of cosmic sun so I do it all! The hand making of the clothes, the social media, the packaging and shipping as well as all the customer service. I like to think I’m pretty disciplined when it comes to running my business and take my career in this seriously, it’s my full time passion! I’m also a big advocate for sustainable slow fashion and intention when it comes to dressing and purchasing clothing. I consider my brand eco conscious as I utilize materials that have already been donated and need the opportunity for new life. Bringing interstellar ideas and concepts to wearable art is my pride and joy.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of sharing my works with my community is seeing how at home I can help someone feel when they wear a piece of my art. Clothing, to me, is the most raw form of self expression! It’s walking art in real time and that’ can be something really powerful for people.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Upcycling materials and reducing clothing that ends up in a landfill is a massive mission of mine with Cosmic Sun. I create mostly patchwork pieces which means I save every little scrap I could possibly use and rework it into new pieces of fabrics. Not only is this a form of fiber art I’m drawn to but it helps with my moral views on sustainability and helping to reduce textile waste.
