Hi Olumide, thanks for joining us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.

My parents got two things absolutely right that have deeply impacted my life and career: authenticity and the power of education. They taught me to treat everyone with respect, regardless of their position, and this principle has shaped how I build relationships in my career. Their emphasis on education propelled me to pursue my dreams, even when the path was uncertain.

I recall a vivid memory from my childhood where my parents invited their church member to our home for dinner. It didn’t matter who they were professionally, my parents treated them all with the same kindness. This lesson has stuck with me, guiding my interactions in my clothing business and podcast ventures.

Their belief in education gave me the courage to take risks and follow my passions. When faced with a career crossroads, their unwavering support pushed me to start my clothing line and launch my podcast. Their influence continues to drive me forward, reminding me that being genuine and valuing knowledge are the keys to a successful journey.

Greetings, I’m Oyebanji Akins (DjO2fresh), and my journey is a vibrant tapestry woven with entrepreneurship, creativity, and an unyielding commitment to cultural connection. My path led me to the dynamic world of fashion with “Black and Bold,” a brand that stands for much more than just clothing. As an immigrant from Nigeria, I recognized the need for a line that not only celebrates our heritage but also resonates across borders.

Beyond fashion, I hold three degrees – the first in Accounting, obtained in Nigeria, followed by an MBA earned in Malaysia (affiliated with Anglia Ruskin University, UK), and most recently, a degree in Cybersecurity here in the United States. My academic pursuits, coupled with my entrepreneurial spirit, have shaped my multidimensional approach to life. But that’s not all. I’m also a skilled DJ, curating music for private parties and events, infusing each occasion with the right vibe.

I embarked on my journey as an influencer on Twitter, consistently sharing insights and fostering connections for the past four months. The results have been tremendous. At the present moment, during this interview, I’m riding the wave of a review I did on Burna Boy’s latest album “I Told Them.” This review garnered almost a million impressions on Twitter, a testament to the power of dialogue and shared passions.

My end goal, fueled by my education, entrepreneurial ventures, and my newfound influence, is to bring awareness and bridge the cultural differences between Africans and black communities, particularly African Americans, around the world. Having been privileged to live and learn across four continents – Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America – I’ve gained the confidence and assurance that, with time, our commonalities will far outweigh our differences. My firm belief is that with open minds and a willingness to connect, we can create a stronger, more unified global community.

In addition to my creative endeavors, I proudly host the “CTDAmongblacks” podcast (Connecting the Dots Among Blacks). Here, I delve into insightful conversations that illuminate the journeys of being black. Through these dialogues, I aim to inspire, educate, and foster connections that transcend cultural divides.

My proudest achievement lies not only in the platforms I’ve built but also in the conversations I’ve sparked. I invite you to explore the symphony of my experiences – from the classroom to the turntables, from entrepreneurship to podcasts – a narrative that seeks to unite, celebrate diversity, and inspire a sense of belonging.

Starting a business in America wasn’t on my initial agenda when I arrived in the country, but fate and destiny have a way of weaving themselves into our lives, especially when we’re dedicated to being authentic. The inception of my clothing brand was an unexpected twist, catalyzed by the pandemic and an inspiring post from P. Diddy. His words struck me profoundly: “If you can’t find your purpose or what you’re capable of during this Covid period, then you’re lacking a dream.” That statement ignited an unquenchable fire within me and set my journey in motion.

Embarking on the clothing line venture wasn’t a walk in the park, particularly because I was stepping into the intricate world of capitalism without prior experience in fashion. I faced failures, ridicule, scams, and moments of feeling used. However, amid the challenges, I encountered incredible individuals who generously shared their insights, guiding me on this daunting path. These individuals, like angels in human form, renewed my spirit and fueled my unwavering faith in my dreams. Although the clothing line is currently on hold as we work on innovative ideas for next year, the setbacks have only fueled my determination.

My podcast’s inception wasn’t part of the original plan either. It emerged as a response to mismanagement by a close friend, which led to financial challenges. This setback served as a second wake-up call, reminding me not to abandon my aspirations. Simultaneously, I faced personal turmoil, with misinformation and communication issues leading to the demise of a significant relationship. Despite these trials, I clung to my unwavering belief in myself and my dreams.

Times grew even tougher, and I found myself selling off my possessions to keep the embers of my dreams aglow. This arduous journey led me to this very moment, where I am humbled to share my story through this interview. My upcoming book, titled ‘Billion Dollar Dreams: From Nigeria to America,’ encapsulates the essence of my path, showcasing how each hardship only fueled my resolve to succeed. While life’s twists and turns have tested my mettle, they’ve also reaffirmed my faith in the power of resilience and the limitless potential within us all.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?

Securing the initial capital to kickstart my business journey was a tale of resourcefulness and adapting to circumstances. The inception of my entrepreneurial endeavors was buoyed by an unexpected source: driving for Uber. Prior to the pandemic, this opportunity provided the financial bridge I needed to embark on my aspirations. As the pandemic unfolded, I found myself presented with unique opportunities – government loans and stimulus checks. These funds became the cornerstone of my initial capital.

However, my limited understanding of the intricacies of the American financial landscape, specifically “Capitalism,” led me down a challenging path. My Nigerian sensibilities clashed with the financial system, and as a result, my approach to managing my clothing line faltered. The lessons learned from this experience were invaluable, even though the journey was characterized by trials.

My journey took another turn with the inception of my podcast. This venture was fueled by my personal savings and a willingness to part ways with some of my belongings. This resourcefulness allowed me to forge ahead despite the financial constraints. It was during this phase that I recognized the importance of building both my personal and business credit, a vital step towards securing a more sustainable financial future.

Through the ups and downs, I am on a mission to learn, grow, and adapt. My journey to fund my business has been a testament to resilience, determination, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. As I work towards building a stronger financial foundation, I am committed to harnessing the power of both personal and business credit to create a better and more sustainable future for my endeavors.
