We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Olivia Thorn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Olivia , thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Being a senior at the University of Cincinnati in Spring 2022, I always knew I was passionate about utilizing and developing social media platforms. Growing my own Instagram to 20,000 followers over my high school and college career, I knew it was something I was good at as well. However, it is not a common decision once graduated to start your own business right off the bat. So I sat with the feeling of wanting to be my own boss, but feeling I lacked the experience and knowledge to do so. Then one day I woke up and realized I am only holding myself back, how many more days am I going to deprive myself of the career decision I want to make? So, I did it! I took the risk and started my own business of social media management, instead of playing it “safe” and taking a steady, corporate office job.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Olivia Thorn, a 23 year old, social media management business owner, based in Cincinnati. Born and raised in the age of social media, I feel I bring a completely in tune approach to posting and engaging on social media for businesses. Having a keen eye for what gets people interested in your business’ page photography and copywriting related, and knowing the tricks for the platform to reward your account. This knowledge is done by constantly continuing to stay connected and educate myself on the changes to the platform itself. It is such a privilege to work in a field I feel so genuinely curious , confident, and passionate about!
How did you build your audience on social media?
Authenticity and staying true to your audience and your brand’s message is how you build an audience on social media, for any business big or small. When first starting to build your presence on social media, there is a pressure to post as frequently as possible. However, a simple rule is genuine quality over quantity. Stepping back and thinking: does this post have value for my followers?
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Consistency, communication, and dependability has helped me greatly in building my reputation within social media management. The consistency of photography quality, copywriting skills, and coming through on my word. The communication of sharing a content calendar, Instagram analytics meetings, and making sure I am up to date on upcoming events and specials. The dependability of showing up weekly to shoot content, being prompt to meetings, and uplifting staff when creating content to promote positive experiences in those extra details!
