Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Olivia Tee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Olivia , thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The journey of the creative is one I think we can all relate to. In my soul, I knew I didn’t want to work a routine job, but I felt it was all I could do. It wasn’t until the end of summer that I started pursing what I really love. Being laid off at my content writing job spurred me to buy an ice cream machine, a juicer and start making pizzas from scratch for my business. My wants are simple but it took years to muster the courage to finally start.

Olivia , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into jewelry making as a little girl, and it helped that my mom was a jewelry artist . The gleaming colors and the cool touch of the beads never left me. A year ago, I decided to start making jewelry again. My aim wasn’t to start a business, but once people saw my work they wanted it! I mostly make wire jewelry and work with gemstones, but my work also is beading, threads, yarns, and more. I typically make custom jewelry, but I still make iconic pieces on my own. What sets me apart from others is my simple aesthetic and intricate designs. People come to me for unique, one of a kind items that will make a statement. I’m most proud of my evolution as a jewelry maker. Each month I can see my progress. I want people to know that jewelry isn’t just a fashion statement, it is also a personal statement. The purpose of the jewelry I make is to help people enhance their style and also provide a sense of dignity and self-love.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part is seeing my progress and experiencing my own creative evolution. I enjoy looking back at old pictures of what I used to make and noticing the improvements or tinkering with something to make it even better. Being able to always evolve my craft and skills enriches my self-worth and helps me to appreciate the work of others.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
My boyfriend got me the book Show Your Work by Austin Kleon. It was a really helpful book because it inspired me to just get out there and start somewhere. You have to start somewhere, and I needed to understand that. Not having all the “right” materials or the best lighting for photography couldn’t be what stopped me. Taking the dive, trusting myself and being confident in the process is what I learned from that book.
