We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Olivia Ramirez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Olivia , appreciate you joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I am So happy being a business owner, it has worked out for me for many years now. It might not be the same for many people which is totally understandable. Why do I love being a business owner, well I love working on my own terms, hours and pressure. I love taking trips to my hometown and spending time with my family in Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico, and obviously if I worked under someone else, my time would be limited to my needs. Even though it’s not all sunshine and daisies, things do get tough but I would not change it for the world. I try to teach the same to my son. Live your dreams, find a job that makes him happy so he won’t have to work for the rest of his life. The key to life is to be happy, find what we love to do.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So I’m a self made sterling silver jeweler, I learned the craft in high school in Santa Maria, California and fell in love with it. As I know, it might be in my genes, I have an uncle who was known to work with gold and made special jewelry pieces in Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico. I met him a few times I was very young. But since then I’ve always loved making jewelry with beads and colorful strings. Now I obviously changed the beads and colorful strings for silver and semiprecious, mineral stones. I love designing and love it even more when a piece is fully finished. I fall in love every time when it goes from designing in paper to the full effect of having the piece in my hands, which sometimes I end up keeping and eventually I make more to sell on my website. The key here is to be your own fan, your own blogger your own PR. It is very important to create content and post on social media, use every, most or all platforms to get your craft out to the public and engage and eventually sell your work.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Building a clientele is evidently very important for me. Social media specifically Instagram has been my number one “go to” for reaching more people and engaging in new sales. The public loves watching videos of the process of your products and that platform has a very full on service to reach more people, including stories, reels, videos, pictures, online store, hashtags etc. Another form of reaching new clients is Pop-Ups in your local area, Farmers Market. As a new small business owner you should try to do everything you can to get your business out there.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
I started selling my jewelry through Instagram, people would dm me about a piece I’ve posted and talked to them about what they were interested in or if they had a design of their own, and we would go from there. Then after a few years I was SO scared to open my own website and I procrastinated until I made myself promise to open it. Now its been running for a few years and somehow people come through my Instagram to purchase items. Which is lovely, and my clients and the public can reach me through Facebook, TikTok, Website and Instagram. Evidently it will be different for everyone but I don’t think having all social media platforms is bad, it might be more work but you just never know where you can reach more people. Plus it’s a very important key for your business.
