We recently connected with Olivia Murray and have shared our conversation below.
Olivia, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
December 2021 I had the idea to open my business. I knew I needed to start taking action to turn my vision into life. I started purchasing things for my studio in January of 2022 so I could slowly get things without breaking the bank. I didn’t want to have to buy everything at once because it would have been overwhelming.
I also started saving $70 in cash a week from tips and $250 from every single check which put me in a great financial position as I had been doing that for years before opening. So I had plenty saved before I opened up my business.
In May of 2022 I found my studio I was going to rent and then we signed for August 2022.
I started writing down my clients contact information, what services they got, and how much it cost so I could predict how much I was going to make my first month. This helped me feel confident about opening up my business and be in the right mindset. I also booked my clients in advance so I had them on my schedule. I let them know months before I was leaving so they would be prepared and not surprised about it
Olivia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
can you please tell our readers about yourself: I am 25, married to a small business owner, have 2 dogs, and I’m child free by choice. I am a gym rat, music admirer, traveler, and sunset lover. Focusing on my business is my biggest priority.
how you got into your industry: I started off as a hair dresser assistant when I was 14 and fell in love with the industry. I then went to EVIT to hair but realized it wasn’t my passion, but skin care was. When I graduated high school I then went to SWINA for aesthetician school and finished May of 2017.
Discipline: I knew no one was going to hold myself accountable besides me. I had to do what I said I was going to do and to-do lists were a huge help for that. As a business owner you have to stay committed and disciplined or it wouldn’t be successful. I started listening to podcasts and reading self help books and it helped me so much.
what type of products/services/creative works you provide: I offer full body waxing, facials, anti-aging treatments and acne treatments.
what problems you solve for your clients and/or what you think sets you apart from others: I help them heal their acne holistically in 3-6 months without the use of harsh topicals or medications.
What are you most proud of: being able to change my clients skin, life, and confidence and positively impact them
what are the main things you want potential clients/followers/fans to know about you/your brand/your work/ etc: I want to help you feel like your best self and I can do that through results driven products and treatments
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started posting 2-3x every single day. Rain or shine I posted. I used hashtags like #tempefacials #phoenixwaxing #azmicroneedling to get new clients in the door. I also created a brand and had my page look very cohesive. Same fonts and colors to make it look aesthetically pleasing. I hope to get around 1000 followers every single year! My best advice is to stay consistent and post as many tips and tricks as you can to add value to your page.
I also message each one of my followers and offer them 20% off (my first time client offer). This way they know I am a person behind the screen and I’d love to work with them.
I tried to focus on not being perfect. I wanted to be real and authentic and that means some days I don’t have makeup on or look my best. But at least I’m trying!
I posted in local Facebook groups a lot. Reached out to people interested in my services and linked my booking site
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I first started my business, I shared a room with my old friend. We agreed on the same decor, made pintrest boards, Amazon wish lists, sent screenshots back and forth, and talked about our vision for the room. But the girl I roomed with, went behind my back and completely switched it up and it was literally the most ugliest thing of my whole life and the opposite of what we talked about. I couldn’t eat for a week and was literally crying on my shower floor because I thought no one would ever come to my business because it looked so trashy and unprofessional. I had to switch up my mindset and work 10x harder because I was convinced my room would turn people away. Instead of using it as an excuse to not be successful, I tried to use it as motivation to grind harder than I originally planned. It was such a rough start to my business but I think it happened for a reason.
