Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Olivia Moore. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Olivia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I have a very narrow niche, something my industry avoids. Both as an officiant and coordinator, I choose to be available to the minorities, the off beats, the little guys. (Which is not where the financial success can be found.)
As a proudly pagan officiant, I only attract couples who are looking to have pagan ceremonies. While the country we live in is largely (politically and socially) Judeo-Christian, this is an air that permeates weddings, wedding planning, wedding ceremonies and traditions alike for couples who practice an entirely different faith.
As a micro wedding coordinator, I provide couples with small weddings and thus small budgets with the planning assistance and coordination of a large scale wedding on a level more relevant to their needs. I don’t want to shove them out of budget or build a bigger vision. I want to help them celebrate their love story in a wedding environment that doesn’t stress them or their budget. I feel like my industry is always trying for bigger, better, more… I simply want to help clients discover pros and methods that allow them to have meaningful celebrations what won’t create financial chaos in their lives to follow, causing arguments, and voiding the entire joy of getting married.
Olivia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My education is in religious history and mythology with studies in sociology, psychology and symbology. For much of my life, my peers and friends have wondered what one could do with such a degree other than teach. My answer, marry people… their way. With their unique traditions from handfastings and elemental altars to Indigenous American blanket ceremonies, I want to bring marriage out of the Judeo-Christian normalcy in this country and allow couples young and old, heterosexual and homosexual, to wed in a way that reflects their love story.
This business was built largely out of the void I found when planning my own pagan wedding. But also out of a love of religious myth, ceremony and people, a love of love, and a talent for writing.
I originally wrote science fiction novels (and still do), but this allows me an opportunity to actually make a career out of writing, as I have always wanted to do, as unfortunately without a killer marketing team an author isn’t a well paying career these days.
I am proud to be a defier of normalcy and a celebrator of your story in an industry that builds its success largely off of over-marketed trends. Wedding ceremonies are for me an opportunity to make you laugh, and cry, to help you remember your journey to this place and anticipate the path that lies ahead. It’s not a copy- paste job and it’s not something anyone can do. It is an experience that should be customized as much as the rest of your wedding to reflect you and provide you a shared moment in time to always look back on as the moment you said “yes…and always”.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Specificity and clarity. It’s all anyone really wants at the end of the day. I discovered what mattered to me, my business intentions, who I wanted to inspire and connect with and then build my reputation on that.
There aren’t many in my field who specialize like I do and I think that is to avoid narrowing their market. But I found narrowing my market to be exactly what caused it to grow… don’t be afraid to say “this is me” because the people who will want to work with you will want to also say the same and you might inspire them enough for them to choose you.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Social media, specifically instagram, and Google My Business. I don’t do a whole lot of marketing otherwise. I find that being visible online with consistency is the greatest asset as well as having a very honest and informative website. Many of my new clients tell me on their initial call that they reached out to me because my website was the most clear, honest and professional looking they found when searching. Your website is your resume and I find that putting most of my energy into that brings in clientele faster than anything else.
