Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to OLIVIA FOX. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
OLIVIA, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
This is different for each of us, but thinking back to more of our beginnings, it had never really been about the money.
We started this band as a group who loves and is dedicated to making good music that’s relatable, catchy, and has depth. When we first starting gigging, we had no idea where this journey in music would take us and so when we started booking gigs that actually paid, it felt like such a wild accomplishment and such an honor to feel like people wanted to hear our music! There we were, enjoying songwriting, crafting harmonies, and putting together instrumentation because we just ENJOYED, and we were actually making money from it too? So wild.
I imagine it’s a surreal moment all creatives must have when they get paid for simply pursuing what has always been the dream. Making money as a creative is wonderful, but even without pay, I think we are all in this for the passion and joy of making music that we love and simply want to share it with whoever will listen.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi! We are OLIVIA FOX: Lauren Flynn (guitar, vocals, songwriter), Tiffany Smith (Violin, guitar, vocals, songwriter), Aubrey Dykeman (keys, vocals, songwriter), and Tyler Banks (Producer, drummer, songwriter). We all came together through our love of The Office – just kidding, it was our love for music. But the Office is definitely a close second.
We are a folk-pop band, focused on harmonies and multi-instrumentation combined with pop beats and synths. What sets us apart is that we aim to be a strong female presence, with the hope to empower women through our music with writing that is honest and vulnerable.
Don’t take our word for it. We are really proud of our music and would be so honored if you take a listen!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being musicians is taking a thought and turning it into an emotional expression that is not only felt by us as the artists, but also those that are listening to it on their own or experiencing it during a show. The live aspect is especially rewarding. Feeling the power of connection with the listener, and physically feeling the energy between us. Seeing tears through a sad song, or clapping along or bobbing their heads. The audience is creating a moment right there with us and it’s electric. There’s nothing like the feeling of walking off of that stage, knowing that you brought everything you had and everyone in that room or venue was feeling the exact same vibration. It’s good for the soul.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is an ever-changing beast that we, along with everyone else, have had to learn to adapt to. We’ve always been very intentional about our socials and how and when we want to post. We actually sometimes have meetings dedicated specially for it! But it’s always been important to us to be as genuine, sincere and as true to ourselves as possible because that comes through in an online presence. Also, we just generally really love interacting with followers and those who engage with us online. It’s easy to want to please everyone but don’t be afraid to be your most authentic self because ultimately that will lead you to those who celebrate you for you.
