We were lucky to catch up with Olivia Anderson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Olivia, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I started photography when I was a senior in highschool. I took some photos of my senior classmates and realized how much I loved it! From there, I started photographing more families, more seniors, and eventually took on some couples’ shoots. It wasn’t until some of my friends got married that I took my first wedding photos, and BOOM, I fell in love with wedding photography! I really learned my skill from the 7 years of practice I’ve had. Looking back, I wish I would have done mentor sessions with other photographers but I’m also so proud of how much I’ve learned on my own.
Olivia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello! Thanks for reading, and I’m excited to tell you more about myself and my business! I own Olivia Anderson Photography, and I am a photographer in West Michigan. I mainly photograph couples from their engagement season through their wedding day, but I love mixing in families and individual portraits, too. I’m so proud to capture intimate moments for people. It’s such a joy to deliver memories in photo form for my clients. My goal is to deliver timeless and personal images that you’ll keep forever.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
A goal that drives me creatively is always to be the best storyteller I can be. In order to do this best, I really like to mix in both posed images and prompted images. That way, clients get the classic portraits that are always beautiful to look back on while also reliving memories through the more candid images.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The biggest pivot of my life so far has been through photography, actually! I went to school to be a social worker. I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in 2019. I used that degree through 2020 but after photographing some weddings during the pandemic, posting them, and experiencing a huge influx of wedding inquiries, I was able to go full time just a few months later. Thankfully, this has been a huge dream come true.
