We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Oliver Perry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Oliver, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I first knew during my junior year of high school that I wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally. I decided to apply to the School of Visual Arts, NYC and majored in illustration.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I enjoy drawing in a charming and whimsical style using various mediums, mainly ink and watercolor. I love looking through vintage art books, vintage New Yorker Cartoons, and their magazine covers for inspiration. In a world filled with digital and A.I., I sincerely appreciate the perfectly imperfect nature of authentic hand-drawn illustrations. My work is driven by my love of illustrating stories, particularly humor. Expressions and characters are a vital part of my work. I am available for Editorial Illustration, Children’s Book Illustration, and GIF Animations.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is that I am able to continuously improve upon my creativity. I am eager to explore different art mediums and to work diligently to master them.
I love seeing the faces of students and adults who genuinely appreciate my art lessons and to support anyone interested in improving upon their artistic skills.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The goals which drive my creative journey include:
to become an Art Director, working with illustrators
to design a cover for the New Yorker Magazine
to become a Children’s Book Illustrator
to bring smiles to people’s faces with my illustrations
