Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Oliver Evans. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Oliver thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Looking back at the decisions you made early in your career, particularly whether to join a firm or start your own, do you feel you made the right choice for that stage of your career?
When I first started out in Real Estate, I decided to join eXp Realty. A lot of the time people join one of the big name companies because they must be big names for a reason right? I’ll do the best there? Unfortunately that is not always the case. I have nothing bad to say about them but I needed a little more structure mixed with the freedom of being able to work from home too. They have some amazing agents and everyone was very great to me so I don’t regret it and it motivated me to push and try and get leads on my own since Real Estate is your own business. Real Estate will quickly show you that you need to put the hours in and be motivated to get any type of work come your way. That motivation I had to find leads actually helped me find my brokerage and place where I call home now at McClure Group Realty.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Before I got into Real Estate I had been in customer service and sales jobs all my life. I love working with people and I love seeing the reaction of someone when I’ve made their day or helped solve a problem of theirs. Of course in those fields of work there are good days and bad days. The more I continued to work in those fields though, I realized that not that many people remember you or you don’t remember that many people when you work with hundreds if not thousands of people a day and if they do it’s not always the good situations that remember you. That is what really pushed me towards Real Estate. I wanted to continue to help people but really work a little more intimately with people and what is more special than essentially the biggest purchase you’ll make in your life? I get to wake up every day and help people within all price ranges find the home they are looking for or help sell the home they currently have for their next adventure. The best part is I get to just be myself. When someone signs a contract to work with me on either buyer or seller side, they know they are getting someone who will get them the best deal to save them money in their pocket, will be available to respond anytime of the day or night, and will make sure you are taken care of even if I have to be brutally honest to make sure I am getting them the best deal possible haha. I take huge pride in saying all my clients have given me 5 star reviews and that’s the biggest thing to me, making sure my clients are happy even if the deal doesn’t work out.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
When I was at my previous brokerage I wanted to make sure I was reaching out to people as much as I could. I started walking around my neighborhood and putting flyers in peoples newspaper holders to see if anyone local would be looking to sell their home and since people would see me walking my dog around maybe it would help that they knew who I am. In doing this, I ended up having someone reach out by the name of Robert McClure. Turns out he had seen my flyer but he had his own Real Estate company. My flyer, which I had started to get leads, had gotten his attention since it was showing that I had discipline and motivation to work. I went and met him at his office and we discussed everything and he showed me how to be prepared. He knew a huge amount about me and it really made me feel valued. After a lengthy discussion and me pretending like I had to think about it, I informed him I would like to switch to his brokerage. Since joining McClure Group Realty I have become a top 5 producing agent of 2023 in the company, gotten broker of the month in October plus multiple Grinder of the month awards, and have continued to grow each month. McClure Group Realty really helped provide the tools for me to be able to reach out to many more people and help them with their major life purchases.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Making the switch to Real Estate was not an easy choice. When you’ve lived your whole life knowing you have a check coming in every 2 weeks, it can be a very scary change. I really started to think about it right after Covid hit because a lot of jobs were laying people off and at one point I went and started delivering pizzas just to make sure I had money coming in to help support my wife and I. I had a decent job in sales for a hotel but when you talk to hundreds of people a day and don’t really get as much done for someone as you would like, it does make you think… Can I do more? I started taking the Real Estate classes and after I passed the class and exams first time I thought, maybe I do know this really well and I can do this full time. So I left my job and went full time real estate. That didn’t last long because after a very slow start and no check income for 2 months I panicked. Luckily, I had kept a good reputation with my previous job and they happily took me back and I continued to do Real Estate on the side. Everyone can decide whether you should do Real Estate on the side or not or if you should be full time, but it got a bit of fire under me. I got a couple sales going and it pushed me to then again go full time about 4 months later. It still to this day can make you a little nervous when you know you have a family you need to provide for and you have to wait for that one close to happen that you have lined up but then the next month you might have 3 or 4. It can also be a great motivator and if you’re willing to use that motivation and push it can help you have a great career in Real Estate. I couldn’t be happier that I made the change.
