We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Olga Woźnicka a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Olga, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I first thought about knitting many years ago. I was looking for clothes for my daughter, I didn’t find anything nice corresponding to my sense of aesthetics in stores. Then I thought … Hey! Olga, you can knit, just do it yourself. I made my first little sweaters for my older daughter, then when my second daughter was born, I made my first hats. My friends had children, they wanted to make hats, scarves for them as well… And that’s how it started. I made hats for children, and later also for adults. My dream was to make sweaters and other things and now this dream is coming true.
Olga, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
At the beginning, I showed my products on the blog. They were different things back then. In addition to knitwear, I sewed things from felt, which I decorated with embroidery. I was looking for what I feel best in, because I can do many things by hand. Later, however, I stayed only with knitting and crocheting.
I started my own company.
The time of Instagram came, thanks to which I could show my products to the whole world. I made personalized blankets for newborn babies, hats, shorts, sweaters. For adults, hats, scarves and the fashion for handmade sweaters was slowly beginning. A dream was beginning to come true.
Today I make sweaters to order. only from natural yarns. The customer can choose the cut, type of yarn, size. She can adjust the sweater to her individual needs and this distinguishes me from other knitters. I make my knitting dreams come true. Recently, I have also been writing patterns for knitting.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best support for creators is to choose their products instead of mass production, which is often unethical and not ecological. Products like mine are not disposable, with good treatment they serve for many long years. Work is very important to us and thanks to orders I have something to do.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I am constantly developing and improving my skills. Despite so many years of work, there are still things I can still learn. Now I can also teach others to knit or crochet, I write patterns for them, record instructional videos, write books.
