We recently connected with Olga Cher and have shared our conversation below.
Olga, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I grew up with a father who was a full-time artist and jeweler. Throughout my childhood, my father always gave me different artsy projects and taught me many ways to be creative. I was so lucky to be exposed to many mediums and tools as a kid and try different methods of expressing my creativity, including painting, metal work, and photography. After the birth of my first child, I wanted to create clothing with my artwork and message of peace. I tried different ways of printmaking, and block-printing was a total hit. I remember going to my father’s workshop and asking him for tips for block-carving and he gave me a set of vintage carving knifes. I practiced carving some of my designs into the printing blocks and it was so intuitive and easy for me, it felt so right, I knew I found my way. I created several printing blocks out of my drawings and people really seemed to like them, so I opened an Esty shop first. After several years, I decided to take my side art business to the next level and opened my own website. Finally, about a year ago, I felt brave enough to go full time, block-printing my art on clothing and spreading my message of peace, freedom, and green living thorough my art. This journey took several years, of learning the art process of block carving and print making, but I don’t think I would try to speed it up in any way, I believe it was all in the right timing. I encountered some obstacles along the way, but they were not significant enough to even remember, as I always try to focus on the good.

Olga, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I grew up with a father who was an artist that inspired me to always help others and create beautiful things. Being creative makes me feel happy & truly alive and so throughout the years I tried lots of different artistic paths. When my first (Hippie) Baby Kai was born, I felt like my internal creative energies aligned and my true calling was born – My new direction was block printing!
My son was my original Hippie Baby inspiration & motivation. With the love & support of my family & friends, hippie baby co was born in 2015. It was an on-off journey in the beginning, until 2020 when I decided to dedicate it all to have our little shop grow and flourish.
About my block printing process: It all starts with Inspiration (mostly from nature). It may take weeks to perfect a simple pencil drawing before I commit to carve it into a block. My creative editor (my creative sister) will sometimes help me decide on the final touches to make it just right. When the design is ready, the carving process begins. I like to think of it as my artistic meditation. It may take hours to days to carve a single stamp. I take my time, enjoying the process.
When the stamp is ready for printing, the magic begins. Each item is hand-printed with love & care. The fabric prints allowed to dry for about 24hrs and then heat set to prepare the artwear to be enjoyed by the little ones & you.
Each of my designs is born out of love to spread the love. My goal is to promote positive thinking through art around the world.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to promote peace, freedom, and green living from a young age. The big picture, is that I am trying to “save the world” by using my art. Every design I create, has layers of meaning. I know some of the meanings are direct and some may be subliminal. I always thank my customers for helping me spread positive messages around the world. I hope my art can change the perspective of at least one child, parent, human, but the goal is to make a huge difference, for a better and more compassion society.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
It was a long and slow journey to grow an organic reach and following on social media. I would suggest staying true to self and not to try to be like someone else. Interact with your followers, always answer comments and messages, show your presence. Also, remember that it’s not about quantity of followers, but quality.
