We recently connected with Olga Afonsky and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Olga thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry
First is the critical shift from weight loss to metabolic health. The conversation is no longer about simply cutting calories and exercising more, but about addressing the root hormonal causes of weight gain, like insulin resistance. Clients are becoming more educated and are looking to improve blood sugar, insulin resistance, and reduce cravings, not just a lower number on the scale.
Second is hyper-personalization through technology. The rise of Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs), smart rings, and other wearables has empowered people to see their own real-time data. This creates a demand for expert practitioners who can move beyond generic meal plans and use this data to co-create truly personalized strategies. There is also a looming threat from AI that is far superior to humans in interpreting data and identifying trends.
Finally, there are multiple online dietitian hubs. They accept insurance, making it challenging for solo practitioners like me to compete with them.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For the first decade of my nutrition career, I saw a frustrating pattern. Smart, dedicated women would come to me, committed to losing weight and improving their health. They would follow all the rules—they ate the salads, did the cardio, tracked their calories—and yet, their progress would inevitably stall. They were left exhausted, riddled with cravings, and blaming themselves for a lack of willpower.
I realized I was seeing the same story over and over. These weren’t people who were failing the plan; the plan was failing them. I knew there had to be a deeper, underlying reason why their bodies were so resistant to change.
This realization sparked a pivot that would redefine my entire practice. I shifted my focus from the surface-level goal of weight loss to the root cause of metabolic dysfunction: Insulin Resistance. I became a metabolic detective, dedicated to uncovering the hidden hormonal roadblocks that keep so many women stuck.
This philosophy is the foundation of my signature service, The 6-Week Metabolic Reset. It’s not a course or a generic diet plan, but a high-touch, guided intervention for a small, private group of clients. In a world of automated online courses, I intentionally keep my practice in-person and intimate. My clients learn to use cutting-edge tools like Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs), not as a gadget, but as a window into their body’s unique language.
What truly sets me apart in a world of wellness influencers is my quiet authority. You won’t find me posting selfies or dancing on TikTok (or Reels). My expertise is not performative; it’s proven. With over 50 five-star reviews and a business built on trusted doctor referrals, my success comes from one thing: getting results for people who had all but given up hope. My work begins where most programs end: in the messy, real-world gap between knowing what to do and consistently doing it when life gets chaotic.
The most rewarding moment is seeing a client’s face when they realize they are not broken. The moment they stop blaming their willpower or their body, and start understanding their biology. It’s a shift from self-criticism to self-empowerment. It’s about ending the war with your body.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
You’ve been writing a weekly newsletter for over three years. This is the single most important tool I have to keep in touch with my former clients and other subscribers. It’s a non-intrusive, high-value way to remain top-of-mind and remind them why they chose to work with me in the first place. I have a 50% open rate, indicating high engagement.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I think my entire business journey has been a masterclass in resilience, and it started from day one. When I graduated with my Master’s in Nutrition, I had this idealistic vision. I was armed with all this incredible science, and I thought that simply providing the best possible advice would be enough to build a successful practice. I quickly learned the difference between being a good nutritionist and running a good business.
Like many new practitioners, my expertise was in human biology, not business and marketing. I started my career as a solo practitioner under the umbrella of a local medical office. It seemed like a safe bet—a steady stream of referrals from the doctor in exchange for a high monthly rent. The reality was that the referrals were just enough to cover the rent. For two years, every single dollar I earned went right back into keeping the lights on. I was driven by pure passion and the belief that I could help people, but from a business perspective, I was struggling.
So, I invested in a licensed program that I could teach to small groups in person. I cobbled together my own marketing, stood in front of those groups, and for the first time, I wasn’t just a nutritionist renting a room; I was an entrepreneur building something of my own. That first year, I made about $20,000. It wasn’t a fortune, but it was mine.
Just as I was finding my footing, the world shut down. COVID-19 hit, and the office closed overnight. The physical practice I had fought so hard to keep afloat simply vanished. It could have been the end. But instead, I took everything I had learned and poured it into building a fully online practice from scratch. 2021 became my most financially successful year.
Even now, finding new clients is a constant challenge, but that journey taught me everything. It forged my entire philosophy. My resilience as a business owner is the same resilience I teach my clients. It’s not about having a perfect plan; it’s about having the tools to adapt when life inevitably gets chaotic.
