We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Oleksandr Malitchuk. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Oleksandr below.
Oleksandr, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I am hoping to leave a legacy of innovation in my work. I have only lived in the US for a few years, but I already offer a unique service. I developed my chrome tattoo style over the past year, and I hope to push the limits of tattooing further. I hope to usher in a new wave of tattoo artists who consider the possibilities rather than the limitations of their art. My next step in testing the boundaries is to combine the style of realism with my chrome tattoo work.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I began my tattooing career in Ukraine around 7 years ago. Owning my own shop in my native city made it possible for me to grow my skills very quickly, and I soon gained invaluable experience and developed my unique style. I came to the United States in 2021, and have been able to establish myself well. My shop, Good Fortune Tattoo, opened in March 2024. My favorite style is my signature: chrome style. However, I am also particular to the fine line style. I very much enjoy being able to innovate within my industry.
I am most proud of the uniqueness of my tattooing style, my success in the United States, and my dream team here at the shop. We are a shop that prides ourselves in welcoming all people and all projects, and the artists I work with are always trying to improve and evolve their art.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Like most, I had to test what worked on social media through trial and error. I considered what content would be the best to promote, engaged with clients quickly and professionally, and created a “look” for my posts. I also worked at a tattoo shop that consistently promoted its artists, which helped grow my page as well.
My first piece of advice is not to buy followers. I know it’s tempting if you just started your page, but try to find an audience through a more organic way. My second piece of advice is to be consistent with posting, editing, engaging with clients, and promotion. Your page should be recognizable to your followers. Lastly, have fun with it! Social media can be draining, stressful, and overwhelming, but that doesn’t mean it has to be. It is a great tool to grow your business and audience, so don’t compare yourself to others too much.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Managing a team takes a lot of consideration, communication, and discipline. I would advise that a good shop owner should be able to properly motivate their team no matter the circumstances. Throughout the first year of owning my shop, I have done my absolute best to show up with a great mood, a listening ear, and the goal to be the example for my team.
As a tattoo shop owner, I hold regular discussions with my team to make sure that the shop vision is everyone’s vision. Our purpose is not to make a lot of money to spend a lot of money; our purpose is to honor the art and create innovation with each other’s support and advice. I always say that our team is a small family, and I do my best to support each artist (and even our shop administrator) like a family member would. We have a lot of fun while we’re doing our best work!
Lastly, if any problems emerge, I enjoy discussing them as a team. I dislike gossip, so I maintain an environment in which any issues can be communicated quickly and effectively.
