We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Oleg Tsank a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Oleg, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
While in art class in 9th grade, I studied great art in detail for the first time. I looked at the different ways one could compose a painting. I explored the color theory and its effects; attracted by the skillful artwork I saw, I was determined to unravel the mystery of masterpieces before my eyes. My fascination with paintings led me to sketch and draw people and my surroundings. I would practice most of my free time, learning the basics of drawing. By the end of high school, I knew I wanted to be a professional artist. In college and university, I studied painting and drawing in depth preparing for an artist’s career.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My fascination with art began at an early age. When I was in grade school, I modeled miniature animals out of clay and displayed them at home and at school. It was in high school that I first learned about the great masters, and painters in particular. My first sketches were inspired by reproductions of paintings and art from local museums. As a result of my fascination with the immediacy of two-dimensional surfaces and their illusionist properties, I studied painting in both college and university. My current focus as a professional artist is painting and drawing. I work in oil, acrylics, and graphic media to create portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. I’m constantly trying to improve my craft as a professional artist. My paintings and drawings are carefully designed from quality materials, providing a strong foundation from the very beginning.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I enjoy the process of bringing something original into existence, turning my imagination into tangible forms, whether it be a painting, or drawing.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
As an artist, I aim to create contemporary art in dialogue with the past. Art that bridges current and traditional ideas is what I am striving to create. Rather than replicating or imitating past styles, I work to reinterpret and pay homage to them. Incorporate elements from specific artworks or art movements and infuse them with a unique perspective and contemporary lens.
