Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ol’ June. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ol’June, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
“With talent comes responsibility.” What do I mean by that? Let me fill you in. I was always musically talented. I come from a family of singers, some saying my grandfather was a monster vocalist. I never got the pleasure to hear this though as he passed when I was a child. As a kid my father would say, “This boy can sing” when I would be humming to myself. Writing song on the back of the bus to avoid the bullies and being in my own world. I hid my gifts until adulthood and masked it with being behind the scenes. It was not until my girlfriend (now wife) said you have a beautiful voice. It took years after to finally step out and ya boy was nervous. But God had plans for and recently got a distribution deal to get my music across the globe. I would say the risk turned out worth it. As a creative you have a responsibility to the world to share it. -Ol’ June
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Ol’ June is a soul singer from the Midwest. His childhood was punctuated by back of the school bus commutes immersed in the comfort of songwriting escape. Hours spent writing, singing and arranging…all to himself. As a shy kid, June concentrated his talents on music production, opting to hold back his true gift of singing and songwriting.
Things changed when he joined the church choir and found his voice. The heartbeat of his personal music journey was marked by long family car rides, soundtracked by the songs of Commissioned and The Winans. He later found himself discovering artists such as Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye. Their music had feeling. Taken by the emotion in their lyrics and the tone of their voices, he found his passion.
Since stepping out of his shyness and into the public arena, collaborators consistently take note on the ease of which he composes, crafting stories about love, God and the state of the humanity through song.
And now, he’s ready to share his offerings with the rest of the world.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
One of my favorite reads which transformed my mind after the Bible. the best book ever written is the Four Agreements by Author Don Miguel Ruiz. This quick read showed me other people’s opinions are none of my business whether positive of negative. This help shape my mind to value my opinions about myself over others. Also, it helped me not want outside validation.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
NFT’s are cool but I would like to art in REAL life. In reality and tangible. Just my opinion though.
