We were lucky to catch up with OGECHI OKWARA recently and have shared our conversation below.
OGECHI, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
This is an amazing question and I will definitely like to share on how I got my first client. I have always been that person that people always reached out to ask questions about venues and vendors and I hav always been been delighted to help people when it came to their event. I remember when I first started my business in 2016 and I was just decorating and making tutus and other random things, someone reached out and was like I want you to help me plan my wedding and I was like a WHOLE ME, I don’t think I am equal to that task. That is a a lot for me to do and I just had a baby. So I told her I will sleep on it and get back to her. The next day, I asked why me and she said I have seen you help others for their events and I see you compassion for the business and I think you will be great and the rest was history. I am happy that I took the role of being the wedding planner for her wedding. I have definitely learned a lot and grew with the knowledge that was gained from doing her wedding even though there was two other weddings that I did before hers. I was excited to make my first revenue even though I was just starting. It was amazing to put a smile on her and her husband’s face along with their guests. I was nervous going into the week of the wedding but I prayed and God really showed out. I will never change this experience with anything and after doing three weddings that 2017, more and more people would reach out to me to do their wedding, U went for doing 3 weddings in one year to 6 wedding in 2018 and 2019, and now every month, I am booked with 2 or 3 events a month. I only give God the glory because he knew what he was doing.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy that has grown my clientele is understanding what my clients wants and executing it in the mot organized way possible. I am also transparent with my clients as well and I will also take the blame for something even when it wasn’t my fault and try to fix the situation so that everyone is happy.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Now this is a great question. I am a very open person and friendly to a fault and I had to learn to separate friendships from business. As a friend, I can do what every it takes to make a person happy but as a business owner, I have to stick to my policies and not deviate from it because humans will try you. This was a hard lesson that I had to learn but it also helped me in my business and I can now separate the two.
