We were lucky to catch up with Ofelia Barber recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ofelia, thanks for joining us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I’ve been entrepreneurial since I was in my teens. I’ve had lots of side gigs and jobs. I started working at a clothing store when I was 15, which in Argentina was very unusual, as most teenagers didn’t work at the time. Later, I sold jewelry, managed a casting/entertainment agency with a friend, and also worked as an English teacher, translator and interpreter for a few years, before starting my career as a C-Level administrative professional.
I decided to be a small business owner after my husband had a heart transplant and became disabled, to help pay for his medical bills, which were outrageous (still are) and also as an outlet to keep me grounded.
Since then, I’ve added a few more businesses to make a bigger impact, especially with my ONEHOPE wine business, as 10% of each order is donated to a non-profit that the customer chooses.
I believe I started my business at the right time and for the right reason. I wouldn’t change it.
Ofelia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The gig economy is blooming and I love a good side hustle! That’s why I offer a variety of products from wine that gives back to clean beauty items and fashion accessories! Think of me as your retail therapist… Whether you need a gift, a customized bottle of wine or the perfect lipstick and jewelry to wear for an event or special occasion, I am your gal!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
With my husband’s health issues I had to learn how to be a nurse and a caregiver in addition to being a wife, a mom, a full-time working professional, and small business owner. Talk about resilience! In fact, resilient was my world of the year in 2021.
However, I tackle all challenges with a smile on my face and a positive attitude. It’s all about perspective. You choose whether to be a victim or a fighter. I have spunk. I am sassy! I choose to fight and not to let the trials and tribulations win…
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Definitely referrals from my customers as well as partnering up with other small business owners to do virtual or in-person events together. Networking and great customer service is key for the success of any small business owner! There are many options out there, so clients need to find added value in the services you provide. Creating a connection and building a relationship with them is crucial if you want to foster customer loyalty.
