We were lucky to catch up with Odester Hepburn recently and have shared our conversation below.
Odester, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about the best boss, mentor, or leader you’ve ever worked with.
The best boss I’ve ever had is at my current job as a healthcare project manager. Each day, I engage with various people, departments, and personalities, all while working toward implementing projects. When I first started in this role, I was extremely nervous, but my manager, Jennifer Morris, truly exemplified what it means to be a supportive and mentoring leader. Jennifer’s depth of knowledge and commitment to excellence in leadership were evident every step of the way. She had a remarkable ability to recognize each team member’s unique qualities while also nurturing their potential for growth. Under her guidance, she created an environment where every team member could thrive individually and collectively. Her exceptional leadership not only supported me but also pushed me to enhance my project management skills and knowledge, ultimately leading to my success in this role.
Odester, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Food Storyteller and Palate Awakeneer dedicated to uncovering and sharing the culinary treasures of Hampton Roads and beyond. My journey into this industry was sparked by a deep-seated passion for supporting locally owned restaurants, which I believe are the true hidden gems of any community. Through my platform, I aim to shine a spotlight on these establishments, guiding my followers and fellow foodies on a flavorful adventure.
What sets me apart is my commitment to providing a holistic dining experience. I don’t just focus on the food; I take my audience on a journey from the moment they step through the door, capturing the ambiance, the service, and of course, the flavors. By sharing my honest opinions, whether the experience is exceptional or needs improvement, I aim to cultivate trust with my audience and encourage them to step out of their culinary comfort zones.
Beyond simply recommending restaurants, I see myself as an ambassador for the local food scene, sowing back into the community that nurtures these culinary gems. I’m most proud of the connections I’ve forged between diners and local establishments, enriching both the dining experience and the community as a whole.
Ultimately, I want potential clients and followers to know that my passion for food extends far beyond just taste; it’s about storytelling, community, and the shared experience of breaking bread together. So join me as we explore the vibrant tapestry of flavors waiting to be discovered right in our own backyard.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I cultivated my social media audience by staying true to my authentic self and maintaining consistency. While it may sound cliché, authenticity truly resonates with audiences in the long run. Initially, I felt pressured to emulate the popular food creatives on social media platforms, which started affecting my perception of Odester Eats, almost leading me to give up. However, I realized the importance of staying true to myself and began sharing my food experiences authentically. It was a reset moment where I found my voice and flow. Consistency became key – whether posting weekly, every few days, or monthly, it’s crucial to consistently share your passion to keep your audience engaged. I prioritize engaging with my audience, aiming for them to feel like they’re dining with me, experiencing the meals, ambiance, and inviting their opinions. Once you discover your identity and purpose, your audience will naturally gravitate towards you, and together, you’ll create an incredible journey.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is connecting individuals with the incredible local restaurants in our area. It’s truly fulfilling when people share their experiences after visiting a restaurant I’ve recommended, saying things like, ‘I checked out this restaurant you shared, and it was amazing!’ Additionally, receiving support and approval from the owners of these culinary gems when I highlight their establishments is incredibly gratifying. I founded Odester Eats with the goal of showcasing the remarkable food scene here in Hampton Roads, encouraging people to explore and enjoy amazing food while supporting our local community.
