We recently connected with Odd Army and have shared our conversation below.
Odd , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Finishing our most recent album was a really meaningful project. We collaborated with the legendary Will Turpin of Collective Soul to produce our full length album Chrysalis, Become! in 2023. This collaboration helped us grow artistically, creatively, and professionally. We road tripped as a band from LA to Atlanta to polish our songs and lay down the tracks at Will’s studio for a month. Working with a music industry veteran and established rock musician like Will transformed our music production process because, until then, all of our music was self-produced and recorded DIY. Accessing his resources, expertise, and equipment pushed us both as studio musicians and songwriters. It was a meaningful experience because we grew a lot as a band and as individual artists, stepping up our game and taking our sound to the next level.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Bold, bodacious, and back-breakingly tantalizing are just a few descriptors that begin to capture Odd Army’s off-kilter essence and seemingly familiar rock sound. Hailing from the Bay Area, Odd Army grew from 4 friends jamming since childhood to a budding force of psychedelic rock, surpassing 200 live shows, and landing prominent venues in Southern California like The House of Blues, The Observatory, and more. Composed of vocalist Fidel Nuñez, guitarist Alec Luttrell, bassist Cameron Kao, and drummer Mitchell Wright, we collaborated with the legendary Will Turpin of Collective Soul to produce our debut studio album Chrysalis, Become! in 2023. Our live shows are high-energy and intense, bringing together fans who have been with us since our LA gig days and new listeners interested in our music. We’ve built a strong community through in-person interactions that continues to grow, and we are excited to keep playing!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Sharing our music with fans and connecting with the music community has been the most rewarding part. While we love the adrenaline and thrill of performing live and the magic of the creative process, the most rewarding aspect of making art is how we use our music to connect with other people. We’ve built in-person relationships with fans over the years playing gigs around LA and engaging in face-to-face interactions and conversations over the music. Our fan base ranges from suburban punks who are looking to cut loose at a house show to middle aged men who say we remind them of Incubus and other music they used to listen to when iPods were a thing, and it’s rewarding to see our music connect with a wide range of folks. Live performances are where we thrive, our music is high-energy, and it’s great to see that energy bounce back off the people in the room during a show. We also get to connect with venue staff, other bands, and artists, extending our music community to include so many people who we otherwise might not meet or get to know.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Unlearning the idea that we have to behave a certain way to find musical success; we’ve realized that there is no blueprint to the music industry. Unlearning this idea has been very freeing because it takes the pressure off and allows us to create and express ourselves without outside expectations. There are so many opinions on how artists should approach the music business, and sometimes the advice can be contradictory. Success is different for every artist, depending on their music, their story, and their goals. We’ve found that we just have to pursue what works for us, plan what’s feasible given our strong suits and interests, and find what keeps us excited and consistent.
