We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Octoryia Robinson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Octoryia, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I ran away from my dream of becoming a published author for ten years. I struggled with believing that I was worthy of writing a book that would sell well in the market. This internal battle felt like something I could never overcome until, one day, I decided to “do it anyways.” I didn’t want to die with the regret of never trying, so I began the process of writing my first book despite my fear of failure. After a nine-month process, my first book “Unraveled Potential” was published!
What happened in the first thirty days after my book was published blew my mind. I began to receive invitations from organizations throughout Florida, California, Alabama, Texas, and more to come, to speak on the topics of my book. Churches, outreaches, businesses, friends, and more were buying my book, hundreds of them at a time; not only was I experiencing an unexpected commercial success, but I was also being sought after to help people just like me to write their book. Imagine that – everything I feared about publishing a book was the exact opposite of what I experienced. I thought I would fail; I sold 20,000+ in my first year. I was convinced I was not worthy of publishing a book, so I traveled to speak to thousands of people on the message. I thought I could not write a book, and now I am helping tons of people write their books.
My entire journey of becoming an author revealed an opportunity to serve a population of people who feared their dreams of publishing a book. And in June of 2021, I opened Dream That Big Publishing with the mission of creating a nurturing community for authors to prosper. As the CEO of Dream That Big Publishing, I desired to create a place for people just like me to discover the courage to accomplish what feels impossible. We provide everything from start to market, to empower an author to prosper. Our services include coaching, editing, distribution, branding, marketing, and promoting. All of our services are provided with a nurturing touch that encourages success from one stage to another.
I personally know how our fears and limited beliefs can get in the way of accomplishing our dreams in life, which is why I opened Dream That Big Publishing. Together we hope to release new and powerful messages to the world and to empower authors to attain commercial success as self-published authors.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
About me: I am a mother of five amazing children and grandmother to one special grandson. My journey to success has not been an easy one. I failed, struggled, lived poor, and made many bad decisions that did not end well. But growing from a teen mom/high school dropout/felon background, my journey taught me resilience the hard way. I was determined to keep trying, keep going, and keep giving it all that I had, no matter what. This resilience led to me building a successful entrepreneurial business.
How I got into the industry: I became a publisher by becoming sensitized to the inner struggles of an author; my journey showed me that people who are afraid of pursuing their dreams aren’t hopeless, lazy-excuse makers. But they could benefit from a nurturing community focused on assisting authors with overcoming internal barriers to publishing their work. We offer everything for an author to prosper from start to market. Services include coaching, editing, branding, distribution, marketing, and promotion.
What problems we solve: We solve the challenge for authors who have a big dream but battle with inner struggles that stop them from executing.
What we are most proud of: We do not focus on selling packages! We are a community committed to authors prospering. It is bigger than writing and publishing to us. We care deeply about the goals of the author and assisting them with creating financial success.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
You need a perfect start to succeed.
This was a huge lesson I needed to unlearn. My life has been riddled with trauma from abuse, poor choices, and the results of my choices. I lived so long, questioning if anything good could come of my life after so much pain, loss, shame, and regret. Once I got the revelation that success doesn’t need perfection, my life completely changed. I started to take responsibility for my future by redefining what I desired in life and taking steps to achieve it.
