We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Octavia Landix. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Octavia below.
Octavia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Up until about a year ago, I have gotten very use to being in the background in my line of work. Much of my energy came from a place of investing and supporting others in there musical careers. I love what I do and enjoy being apart of great art. I found myself in so many situations where people were amazed at my talents and skills implying I be more in the forefront. I would occasionally but then find myself reverting back to where it felt comfortable. Like a yoyo effect, I wasn’t quite ready yet. Now have I made a decision to bet on myself. I understand now that If I am not willing to take a risk on myself, why should I expect anyone else to. No risk, no reward.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Starting off music was my way of escape. It has given me some of the most rewarding times of my life, along with getting me through some of the most traumatic times of my life. Some of my earliest memories with music was hiding my walkman cassette player from my mother whenever I was grounded. I’d lay in bed with the covers over my head hoping she didn’t catch me and I’d listen to music till I fell asleep. I would play my mothers vinyl records of Al Green, Aretha Franklin, and Michael Jackson while play pretending I was a radio DJ. I would speak through this classic vintage microphone interviewing my older sister. She would play along with me and my vivid imaginations. Other times, I turned to music to express myself when people I looked up to felt absent. Some were emotionally and physically due to their use of substance abuse.
At a very young age, I remember my mother had an organ in our apartment. I would sit at the organ and just bang on the keys. I had absolutely no clue what I was doing but it was fun! As I got older, I always remember wanting to actually be able to play the piano from banging on the organ as a kid. My freshman year in high school I took my first piano class and it was a wrap! I remember asking my father to buy me my very first keyboard. It was a Yamaha PSR model with a record button feature. I would listen to songs all day and learn to replay them by ear. I would study all the parts in a song, the vocal melodies, drums, bass guitar, piano etc, and record them on my keyboard like the recording. Right then my journey to becoming a music producer began.
I am from South Central Los Angeles and have lived in some of the most known parts of South LA. I grew up in Compton for a large part of my childhood, lived in Watts from my teens to early adulthood years, then back to Compton, and then Inglewood over the last 32 years.
Trying to find my way in music, I have always looked for doors of opportunity to learn and better myself. I’v played in local bands opening for The Black Eye Peas, The Isley Brothers, LL Cool J, & Macy Gray to name a few. I sought out mentorship to elevate my skills as a musician and producer under the direction of my now friend and colleague Corney Mims. I would make beats, record my friends in my bedroom and do live sound for churches as an engineer on Sundays. I attending college at Santa Monica College for an AA degree in music, then went to Berklee College Of Music for music production, and finally SAE Institute in Hollywood for audio technology. I’v began building my network going to open mics, landing internships with Kolab Entertainment, Bliss Life Records for Amel Larrieux, and working as a studio personnel to music producer Rodney “DarkChild” Jerkins at Capitol Records. This was the groundwork that lead me to take the steps to become a full entrepreneur with my business Luv 4 Musiq Productions.
Luv 4 Musiq is a full-service music production company, that offers songwriting, production, engineering, recording, and digital mastering for music creators. Overall, we specialize in the “music side” of production. We have mastered the genres of R&B, Hip Hop, and Pop and offer production, recording, and mixing services for these and other musical stylings. What makes us stand out is I personally study and cater to creating a musical sound tailored to be memorable and infectious!
One of my proudest accomplishments thus far is being apart of Kali Uchis album Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) which was nominated for a Grammy in 2022. It shows how much I have grown from where I first started. My second proudest moment is producing a song for a phenomenal rising artist named Dayna Madison called “Light A Fire” which was explosive! It peaked # 5 on the R&B/Soul ITunes Charts in the USA. I’m seeing the fruit of my labor in a way I have always wanted and it makes me want to go even harder.
I want people to hear my work and know my sound footprint. I want people to feel what I feel; feel the deep connection and love we all have with music. I want to create that experience for whoever is listening.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Support the artist directly! We are living in a time where streaming is making it hard for artist to make a living off of their art because they keep most of the residuals. It really upsets me because I meet so many artist who deserve it. Many artist are starting to get it now and not release on mainstream digital streaming services as quickly. They are using their own landing pages and websites to promote their music. Look for them there before going to the DSP’s.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to express myself. I have always viewed any art form as a way to speak from places we as creatives may not be able to convey verbally. I find it very rewarding when im able to share my art with others who appreciate, like, and support it. It’s a good feeling.
