We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Octavia Cohen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Octavia below.
Octavia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I am really happy as a creative. I am happy that I can fully function in my passion without the pressure of a company’s policy and procedure of time management according to labor laws. I appreciate that time freedom and fluidity so that I am fully attentive to create.
Octavia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Octavia Cohen, from a small, rural community called Cross, SC. I have been a creative artist since a child in elementary school. I have always enjoyed learning about different types of art modes, while enjoying using different utensils that would bring my imagination to life.
After a long weekend of clothes shopping for Easter, I then realized that there was a slim variety of jewelry that adds that POP of pizzazz as well as pieces that accommodate plus size women. Spirit (God) gave me the vision to create my own jewelry line. The jewelry consisted of hand-painted wood earrings and then I expanded to other pieces (bangles, charms, beads and necklaces), for the entire family.
Because jewelry were hand-painted, I offered scheduled jewelry consultations for those who desired custom made jewelry. The purpose of the consultation is to create a closer connection with my client by asking more personal questions that included allergens to different jewelry findings. I am about to launch a new service that would allow performing artists to rent my jewelry as a prop for movies, shows, etc.
My jewelry is designed to enhance that boldness and confidence that resides within you. One may say that they do not have the confidence like “so & so” however, we are equip with confidence, however, it is up to us to execute and I know for sure that my jewelry is that and definitely a conversation piece.
I am most proud that I have been rocking for so long, whether I did it right or not…the point is, I did it and I am still doing it. I am also proud that people see my heart and passion in my art and that I am trusted to created exclusive wearable art that is only available to them because it was exclusively designed for them; there are no duplicates.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Currently the mission is to reach as many people as I can outside of vending at social events. I have began to take my artistic passion more seriously as the Creator began to speak to me about what my next level will be. Because I view my jewelry as artist pieces, I began to inquire about placing my art in art galleries and/or creating a space (like a mobile gallery) for those who has a true eye for art.
I am always grateful for vending opportunities, however, I think vending is more for more popular items. I know that vending at a flea market is not my niche. Finding spaces for jewelry such as mine has been pretty challenging. I will continue my search for the perfect space for Copper Cohens artistic jewelry.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is having the freedoms (time, space and energy) to create. There’s no particular time that inspiration hits me. In conjunction to the freedoms of being an artist, the ideas are mostly spiritually given. I receive clear instructions on the design and the color matching as well as more specific details. I am honored!
