Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Oak Cliff EZ. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Oak Cliff, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I first started recording music around the age of 8 as a feature for a rap group that my brother started. At first, I actually didn’t care for making music; however, seeing how things came together for the finished product started to inspire me. I began working on music and improving my skills throughout years while also going to school, working jobs, etc. There have been many highs and lows – and even some points where I took time away from music to see how living a “normal” life felt. Even when I tried my best to forget about music, it kept coming back up in my life. Finally, I realized that I had been paying too much attention to other people’s perspectives and I started to look inward for my answers; that’s when I knew that pursuing music professionally is what I want.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
As I’ve stated before, I originally started making music as a feature for my brother’s rap group. From there, I slowly started to get into making my own music. I’ve continued to make music not only as a tool of self-expression, but as a weapon others can wield to combat their inner demons. To elaborate, I believe many of the struggles we face today are mental – and often we suffer in silence feeling that no one would understand us or be empathetic to what we’re going through. Music has the power to bring about change in our energy – whether it be uplifting us, emboldened our spirits, or just letting us know we’re not alone. Music can change your mood, mood changes your thoughts, your thoughts become your actions, and actions eventually define your personality – so if I can help people through my art, I will.
One thing potential fans should know about me is how diverse my catalog is. Some songs are motivational and introspective while others are more straight forward and focus on creating a vibe. My songs also include my various interests. For example, some songs may have references to Anime and DND while others may be club bangers or twerk songs. At the end of the day, I make music that represents my perspective – and I’ve always had a wide-angled view.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Encourage creativity in all forms, and at all ages. So many people grow up believing that it’s bad to think outside of the box or be different – but being different is exactly how we got so many of the great talents and innovations we enjoy today. Encourage people to find the strengths in their unique qualities and the creative ecosystem will have no choice but to thrive.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Creatives tend to follow their intuition. As such, the path we take isn’t always linear and won’t always make sense from the outside looking in. Following one’s intuition often involves taking risks, becoming comfortable with the unknown, and learning to forge your own path in life – despite others opinions on the matter. Even though the road can be filled with trials and tribulations, it can also bring about a sense of purpose on a larger scale – and many creatives would chose purpose over a safe path that (to them) seemed unfulfilling.
