We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nyya Anderson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nyya thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To be successful in a field that some may view as oversaturated, you have to have a strong will to be resilient and to think outside of the box. You have to have the determination to remain relevant and learn different ways to advance in your field. Which means to never stop learning how to be better. You are sort of like a career student.
Nyya, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I began this love for hair as a child. I used to style my dolls and my friends. I enrolled in a trade highschool and earned my Cosmetology training during that time and became licensed after high school from Gordon Phillips School of Cosmetology. From there I worked as a freelance stylist at various salons and then branched off to healthcare. Unfortunately, my creative side was yearning to be set free again so I created Blow Mobile Salon. At it’s conception, there were not many traveling stylist in Baltimore Maryland. There especially weren’t any who went to their clients homes. I found there was a need for people who didn’t want to necessarily sit in a salon all day to get their hair done which is what most people encountered when going to a salon setting. There were also those who weren’t able to go to a salon for various other reasons such as lack transportation, lack of a babysitter or disability. I had found a need that needed to be filled.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The best source for new clients has been word of mouth. I started out with very few clients, I still honestly don’t have as many as I would like but it is continuing to grow. Social media is a great driver for getting your business to new followers and potential new clients. You have to pivot to learn how to market yourself in this ever evolving social media world. Creating good content can be time consuming but it’s free advertising that business owners must take advantage of.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think being true to myself and providing excellent customer service has earned me loyal clients and continued referrals. Continuing education to learn about different techniques and products has earned the trust of my clients. Providing quality service is paramount to me.
