We were lucky to catch up with Nyota Parker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nyota thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
At 16 or 17, I was becoming more self-aware and socially conscious, facing several impactful realizations simultaneously. I hadn’t yet grasped why I was drawn to music, why I operated the way I did, or why I created music in the first place. I remember being asked about my inspiration (during an interview actually, haha) and reasons for pursuing music, and I couldn’t articulate what I felt inside.
This question prompted me to delve deeper into my motivations. As I worked to express myself in a way that was true to me and understandable to others, I realized how much music meant to me. From that moment, I knew there was no other path for me. Music has been at the forefront of every pivotal moment in my life, and I have no regrets about following my heart.
Nyota, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Nyota Parker, a multifaceted artist of Congolese and Irish descent, born in Ireland and raised in Cape Town, South Africa. As a rapper, singer, and songwriter, my music blends elements of Rap, Hip Hop, Neo-Soul, and Alternative R&B, reflecting my distinctive, unconventional style.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working & performing alongside notable artists like Tyler The Creator, Vince Staples, and Tobe Nwigwe in international campaigns for Converse in Sydney, New York, and Johannesburg. I’ve headlined shows in New York, Cape Town, and Montreal, and captivated audiences of 100,000 people at the Festive Lights Switch On in Cape Town. In April 2024, I was honored as Apple Music South Africa’s Up Next Artist, shortly after releasing my album “Intrusive Thoughts.” Additionally, Timbaland publicly endorsed my artistry after listening to my songs, including “SOULLESS,” which was released through my distribution deal with Roc Nation Distribution.
Since 2016, I’ve released numerous singles, two albums, and collaborated with international artists, all while staying true to my non-conformist approach to music.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Simple. Don’t wait until someone is famous to vouch for them. You never know how much word of mouth travels or a how a simple repost can change a life. So many people don’t repost anything to do with their friends because it’s just their friend but we don’t realize that some of the biggest artists right now were “just some friend” of someone else. Also, don’t be afraid of supporting or enjoying/listening to artists crafts that you truly enjoy. It’s so important to just enjoy what you enjoy and do some scouting of your own instead of searching for the validation of other listeners.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is the freedom. Literally, free will is so beautiful. Being able to do anything out of expression and you never know how that may be taken by those around you or not realizing how relatable your vulnerability can be. That part of human connection is so spontaneous yet powerful.
