We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nyla Riley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nyla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I look at my business as a part of my purpose. I am not only providing a service, but I’m using my platform to serve as many people as possible. My mission and purpose is to exemplify what it looks like to trust God no matter how many people doubt you, try to put fear in you, or dislike what you’re doing. When you are focused on doing things that are aligned with God’s purpose for your life, your faith in God has to have an higher power over outside opinions and beliefs. I started my business to encourage everyone to seek God and discover their God given purpose so they can live a fulfilling life. I am confident that no matter what, my business with be successful because God is the true CEO. He gave me this vision and he continuously pushes me to stay committed to the purpose and plan he has on my life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Nyla Riley, a creative from Pine Bluff, Arkansas. I started BrandRX Creative Co., formerly known as BrandRX by Nyla in October of 2020. BrandRX Creative Co. focuses on graphic design and brand management. My target audience consist of beauty brands, realtors, clothing boutiques/brands, and clubs/promoters. I absolutely love my clients and I am so grateful to be able to serve such an awesome community of business owners. It’s amazing how what started out as a simple hobby has now become a my full-time job.
It’s so crazy how God can present to you your purpose at the most unexpected time. I’ve always designed and played around with graphics as a teenager, but never took it serious. After years of praying to God about what my purpose was, he finally revealed to me that it was something I had been doing for years. In May of 2020, I graduated from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, with a Bachelor’s in Business Management/Marketing. Immediately after, I took a huge leap of faith and moved to Dallas, Texas to start a new journey of finding myself and what God wanted me to do. After about two months of working with a terrible marketing company, someone believed in me enough to invest in my craft. I quit my job the NEXT DAY! Now, I definitely don’t recommend just jumping out without God’s direction, but it worked out perfect for me. Two in a half years later BrandRX is still running successfully and serving brands all across the world.
I pray that my story can be a perfect example of stepping out on faith. The key part about having faith, is believing in yourself and trusting that God will work everything out for you. I wouldn’t have any of this without God. His love, mercy, and guidance has led me throughout this journey.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn that not everyone is going to support you, and that’s ok. Sometimes as a small business owner we depend on the support of friends and family to be our backbone. Well I want to be the one to let people know that, that is not important. When God gives you a vision, that vision is for you to understand, not anyone else. He gave YOU the vision, not anyone else, that’s why they don’t understand and that’s why they don’t support it… they simply don’t see the vision AND THAT’S OK!!! It’s perfectly fine actually. I’ve had so many of my family and friends say quitting my job and starting a business wasn’t smart, it’s irresponsible, I wouldn’t succeed, I’m too inconsistent to have a business…. every bit of criticism you could think of, I’ve heard it from those closest to me. I’ve learned that it’s tiring and ignorant to focus on the negative things people say/do. Focus on the people that do support and love on you. Those are the people that matter! Love yourself, love what you do, and believe in God’s plan so that negative energy doesn’t even phase you.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Let’s be honest, running a business is HARD!! Small businesses are especially hard, because of funding and lack of support. So many times us business owners get this pride built up that they feel like seeking financial assistance or taking up a part time job is embarrassing or would hurt their business. I know, because that was me. There have been times where I had no choice but to get a second job to help fund my business during my down times. Sometimes you have to pivot so you can still be successful. Don’t let pride hold you back from reaching your full potential. I’ve had so many jobs during my entrepreneurial journey. Although I’ve hated every job I got during my time, I soaked up as much knowledge and money as I could to help my business. You have to look at things from a different perspective, use what you can to get where you want to be. Having a business doesn’t have to be a struggle if you don’t want it to be. Put the pride aside and do what needs to be done to help elevate yourself.
