We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nyésha Carey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nyésha below.
Nyésha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being a business owner force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Recently, I worked as a personal style assistant for a popular local mall. During my time with them, I truly enjoyed assisting our local stylist, selflessly providing my time, knowledge and expertise. However, as an opportunity arose, I inquired about possibly transitioning into a personal stylist position, but was told that they weren’t willing to nurture any new stylist in their program, except for three particular ladies, who’s names I cannot disclose. This felt like a slap of disrespect. Especially after the manager stated my social life didn’t align with their core values. Not to mention, I was also advised that there wouldn’t be room for promotion for 2 years. Fortunately for me, I know my worth, and quickly decided to confidently move into self-employment. With that being said, I am beyond happy with being a business owner. Working for myself allows me the freedom to engage in work that I’m passionate about, and leaves room for me to create without boundaries. As well as provides me the opportunity to focus on providing my clients with an exceptional experience, and allows me to provide each client with the undivided attention they deserve, whenever they hire me.

Nyésha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
As cliche as it sounds, the most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been no strategy at all. I strive to genuinely connect with individuals, and my ability to listen, empathize, and analyze, while being my authentic self, has opened doors for me, I couldn’t have ever imagined. My ability to be authentic has allowed me to work with multiple celebrities. I have actually had a celebrity tell me, “We are sticking with you, because you treat us like normal people.” Meaning, I don’t get starstruck. I take my profession seriously, but I take connecting with people even more seriously,
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
My husband and I own Carey & Carey Agency, an 8 figure branding and marketing agency. We work together, therefore, whenever he has a brand client, he refers them to me for re-branding fashion consulting, brand photoshoot strategy, as well as social media content development. I absolutely enjoy working along side of my husband/my cofounder. We’ve been married over 20 years, and we’ve had to pivot a few times in business as entrepreneurs, but the past 13 plus years in the branding and marketing space has been phenomenal. Our clients trust and rely on our expertise as a solution to their problems.
