We were lucky to catch up with Nyce Jonez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nyce, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I wish I would’ve started my creative career and embracing my creative side much earlier in life. Most of us are quick to minimize on our creative sides or get caught up by fear, comparison, or imposter syndrome.

Nyce, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Ever since I was in high school I always wanted to become an entrepreneur. I wasn’t always sure of what the path was or what my actual skillset was. I went to college for business management and also earned an MBA a year later however I really started to tap into my creative side once I had my position as a media consultant. During that time I realized although my role was to work with small to medium sized business owners to guide their advertising decisions, I realized my skills as a copy writer and someone that could start to steer design decisions with copy to help craft an impact.
That experience also led me into the education and entrepreneurial space where I worked with a team to create a magazine while also serving as an adjunct faculty member at several colleges. The magazine no longer exists but does influence many of my creative works today. I am still in the education space but also have a media organization called Empower 610 where my partner and I produce a podcast, curate events, and create compelling content.
One of our missions is amplifying voices and stories that often times go unnoticed with our “ETC” model. As you know typically when naming things of a particular order, “etc.’ is used to show similar items but those things are often not defined. That happens a lot in creative cultures and we have made a choice to empower those voices and for us ETC is an acronym that stands for: Empowering The Creatives, Empowering The Community, and Empowering The Culture.
I am very proud of this journey so far and recognize all the things I have done and people I have been blessed to work with have all helped with this type of content creation and unique storytelling. It’s bigger than content but we are crafting in person activations in addition to content creation and streaming. Our motto is empowering minds 1 episode at a time or 1 experience at a time.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I believe if society understood the amount of time, work, and energy creatives put into creating things for them to consume they would have a deeper appreciation. Purchasing products or services supports creatives as well as recommending people to support through purchasing, sharing, or other forms of positive engagement. It costs people nothing to press a share button but I challenge everyone to take it 1 step further and add a unique message to go with the share.
We all know word of mouth is the strongest form of advertising so by adding your own 2 cents to sharing work of that creative can turn into a dime in no time.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I have a strong belief and often say “it is innate to create…” and when I say this I believe we are all meant to be creative and creators to add value to things that exist. I am an introvert meaning I don’t necessarily get my energy from being around people but in order to recharge my battery from doing solo activities.
I bring this up specifically to always try and reach out to other introverts to empower them to try and move that fear to the side and take a leap to put themselves out of their comfort zones in order to achieve and create. Recognize you have a lot to offer in your creative mind so it’s important sometimes to get out of your own way.
