Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nyasha Silas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Nyasha, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
So I have 2 businesses hand lettering artist and wedding photographer.
First off I have a very unusual name it’s Nyasha pronounced (knee-asha) it means mercy and I wanted to incorporate that somehow since in photography I go by my first and middle name.
I always thought the meaning of it was beautiful and comes from a book called Mufaros beautiful daughters. I’ve always loved it as a name and when people asked I was proud of the meaning and why. It was an easy pick. I added Grae to it because it just flowed and couldn’t be happier.
Nyasha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
So I have always been doodling and making cards for friends. Growing up we didn’t always have the money for cards and gifts so my mom always suggested I make them something special. Fast forward to my wedding and I decided to make all the signs myself. After that people reached out and I slowly started growing.
With photography it was kinda the same but I really started to be more consistent during Covid and have been steadily growing since then.
It’s so fun to incorporate both in the wedding industry shooting photography and making signage and jackets for brides.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
How I keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty is by having a good communication with clients whether that be with photography or hand lettering. It’s all about communication and connection.
It’s so important to over communicate and make sure you are providing good customer service. I try to be available by not only emailing but texting with clients as well. Opening the door for feedback and to learn more also helps as well.

Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
For me a big close call was when I made a ton of beautiful signage for a wedding. Mirrors and acrylic sheets. I was so proud of my work. Day of I’m dropping everything off and setting up and one of the acrylic signs broke. I kinda panicked inside but took it in stride. Also always good to be early and so important to keep a level and and figure out next steps. I googled a Home Depot nearby rushed there got another one ran to Michaels for pens and sat in the parking lot to do it all again. Thankfully I finished and still had some time to set up before everything started. It was definitely a scary moment but all worked out.
