We recently connected with Nyanah Shuler and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nyanah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
I find that my business differs from others in my industry as a braider because I care about the integrity of my clients hair and not just the perfection of a hairstyle. When i started my brand my main goal has always been not only to produce amazing looking styles with longevity but to also educate my client on the best ways to maintain and promote growth with their protective styles. I do this by educating my clients on how to maintain moisture and apply products to their style as well as the best method and time frame to remove said style.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Nyanah Shuler, but everyone just calls me Ny. I was born in Phoenix, AZ and I have been apart of the hair industry for almost 10 years now. I got started by watching my aunties braid hair before I taught myself one day. It started with just my little sister then expanded to other family members and friends. By the time I graduated cosmetology school I had grown my clientele from just family and friends into a loyal and growing clientele. I then decided it was time to open up a salon space to take my guests in and built up my brand from there.
I started educating my clientele on how to maintain and take care of their natural hair as I noticed that many of them truly didn’t know how. I noticed that a lot of stylists in my industry didn’t really know anything and or didn’t care much about the healthy and integrity of clients hair and just the overall look of the style. Now I am proud to say that many if not all of my clients have flourishing hair that they are able to maintain or are on the journey to figure out how to do so. I have done this by creating a product line of easy to use products such as leave in conditioner and hair oil for myself and clients to use before , during , and after their styles have been taken out.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
My business started mainly as a hobby. I truly enjoyed my craft and over the course of my teenage years I built up my clientele. Once I finished high school I decided to pursue a career in cosmetology so I went to school to become a hair dresser. However while doing so my business began to grow and grow until I wasn’t able to maintain my full time job , go to school , and take clients in between. I knew that I had to let go of something, so I decided that my full time job wasn’t going to take my much of anywhere when it came to my goals. Once I did that I gave my all to growing my brand. I did everything from referring friends , having sales , business cards but once I started promoting myself on social media my business sky rocketed. A key mile stone for me was when I noticed that after i graduated cosmetology school many of my peers were scrambling to find work and clientele to start their businesses, I was looking for a salon space for myself to further expand and be able to take on even more clientele than I already had.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I find that the best way to find new clients is to service the ones you have with the best of your ability. I’ve learned that when someone really loves something/someone they tend to want to tell everyone about it. Although I use social media , this precisely is how my clientele grew and continues to grow today.
